OLD WARRIORS HONORED.
The Confederate reunion at Dallas
is a thmg of the past, and once
again the wearers 'of the Gray have
had the opportunity of coming to
getaer, and recounting the joys and
sorrows of that conflict history has
recorded as the most sanguinary.
General John B. Gordon, of Geor
gia, has again been elected com
mander in-chief of the veterans, and
this is but another evidence of the
love and devotion shown by the old
soldiers for their former leaders. Af
ter all the years that 'nave passed
since that eventful April day of Ap
pomattox, when the star of the Con
federacy went down, in defeat but
not in dishonor, they still love and
honor those who led them through
many dangers and hardships. This
affection is all the more beautiful lie
cause it is voluntary and spontaneous.
Ad monarch upon his throne receives
such willing and unrestricted homage
from his subjects as do these old
chieftains from the survivors of the
lost cause.
And yet It is not surprising that
this should be so, for the southern
soldiers, from the rank ami file to the
commander-in-chief, were as a band
of brothers battling for a common
cause, and although necessity com
polled that there should be some with
liiiiiioiiiy over the others, ihai au
thority was not exercised except for
the good of the cause and those who
represented it. That authority was
not an iron yoke of tyranny, hut
rather it was a silken hand of love,
and every son of the sunny south was
proud to wear it.
Then golden chords of love 'nave
been strengthened with the passing
years, and nothing will ever have the
power to come between these old
in roes who wore the gray and their
chieftains.
The veterans have chosen tludr ohl
lenders, Gordon and l.ee and Cabell,
and to fill the post of the honored and
lamented Hampton, they have se

I,nightlier men never commanded a

The uniform rank Knights of Pyth
ias made their first nppcarnncq In

plause from the spectators.
The announcement of Rockefeller's
munificent gift of $1,000,000 ib good
nows for the people of the south, since
the sum is to he expended for n,. .i
tioiial purposes ftt this section. And
it is to be hoped that Mr. Rockefel
ler's initiative will lie followed prompt
ly by others. Humanity is very sheep
like in its tendencies, and if it once
becomes "the thing" among the
wealthy to contribute to southern edit
ration, our great disparity in literacy
in respect to other portions of the
country will speedily disappear.
