The News Publishing Company de sires it to be distinctly understood that all legal advertisements must be paid for In advance. We cannot afford to devote our space to such advertise ments and wait on the courts for the money. The new .electric supply company has gone to work with a vim, and will be in position to furnish power by May 16. This ik "picnic week," and the aver age Brunswick child is happy, in the anticipation of a day's outing at the various resorts. The registration books will soon close and those who~wish to vote in the county primary should call on Tax Collector Read and register. The fact that Cumberland island ho tel will open .Tune 1, and has been leased to a good hotel man, will be a source of pleasure to Brunswick peo ple generally. Sheriff Lyens, of Wayne county, has withdrawn his announcement for re noiuination, and by this resolution on his part, Wayne county loses an able fearless ami efficient officer. ■ - -rr i - newspaper man in Georgia lias a kindly feeling in Ills heart for Colonel Estill, and no doubt many of them wish there were two governor snips to give out this time. Tnose German farmers who have re cently formed a colony in Glynn coun ty, have gone to work in dead earn est clearing away their land and plant ing it. They are hard woraers, and are sure to succeed. Governor Savage, of Nebraska, who sometime since pardoned a defaulting state treasurer out of the penitentiary, has been so severely rritized for the act that he has withdrawn from the race for re-election. General Fred D. Grant always man ages to have his photograph taken when he has a cigar between his lin gers. It will require something more than this external resemblance, how ever, before Frederick will he likely to be mistaken for that “Smoky Caesar," his father. We have all heard of persons who shaved their fore heads because they fauoied they had a Shakesperean cast of countenance, and we once knew a college student who had been fold that he looked like Conklin, and who. therefore, assidu ously cultivated a hang on his classic brow. The foibles of human vanity are many and amusing. ~ The New York World thinks that Air. Roosevelt is letteing no grass grow under his feet, but is taking ad vantage of every opportunity. It says: ‘The astonishing appointment of James Sr Clarkson, a political car pet bagger from lowa and one of the most notorious of spoilsmen to too lucrative and Important office of sur veyor of this port, means that Presi dent Roosevelt is thus early ‘out for delegates for the national convention of 1901, and desires not only to placate the Platt machine in this state and to please Senator Allison, but to have a veteran wire puller of nis own in the custom house.” LEADS TO DISASTER. When a girl gets the matinee idol fever to an extent that a very ordinary man of the stage fills her brain, wak ing and sleeping, it’s time for the folks at home to do something. There are such girls—perhaps not | many of them —but enough to consti i tute a type. They are shallow, friv jolous and morbid, and they do foolish things—things that would make the average mother who is sensible shud der did she know all about it. They might, with profit, read about the case of Alice Carey Harlow, at Charleston, 111. Miss Harlow has been a school teacher and poetess. At the beginning she was not a bit more foolish than the girls who write notes to actors and meet strangers of the male per suasion at down-town corners. She went further than the other girls on the same road, and finally conceived an attachment for a young condemned murderer. She visited him in Jail and fell in love with him, or imagined that she was In love. Ixive didn’t stand in the way of the taw, and the public actually pitied the young woman who had lost con trol of herself. The criminal was executed, and the morbid woman prepared and present ed to the legislature a petition asking lor the abolition of capital punish ment. Then she wen* back to writing verses. Last week she was taken be fore a court, made the subject of an inquest and tent Ii an Itisnne asylum “But was she really ii tane?” you aik. *- " Insanity ts lack of *itrial balance. One doesn't have to bar clothing and butt'd ones head against a well to I love insanity. The making of idols out of very common clay is a species of insanity. It is an evidence of disordered intel lect. Some people call it eccentricity, and others plain folly and youthful !m prudence. The name isn’t much moment. It is the result that causes harm, and there Is history tn the coroner’s office and in the columns of the newspapers to prove that the same morbid fcU. ings that took possession of Alice Carey Harlow have had a firm hold on hundreds of other women. It can be cured in Us early stage?:. Sometimes ft effects Its own cure, for common sense comes with years to some. With others enforced parental authority is the only effective reme dy. In almost every ease where a wo man's life ends In disaster somebody lias failed to do his or her duty at a time of life when character was being formed. Governor Durbin, of Indiana, Is quick to grant Kentucky’s requisition for three men who arc charged with murdering a deputy sheriff, and al though efforts have been made to induce Mm to revoke his decision in the matter, he remains firm. It is noticable, however, that the Indiana governor still protects W. S. Taylor and Charles Finley, who are wanted lor the murder of Governor Goebel.
