Valdosta is an enterprising little
city, and we certainly congratulate
her on securing Bosslons of the United
States court.
The president has re-appointed John
11. Deveaux collector of customs at
Savannah, in spite of the protest of
the chamber of commerce, and other
commercial bodies of that city.
The coming of the two great pack
ing houses, Armour ana Swift, will
tie good news to all of Brunswick,
and 1b significant of the fact that
this city is steadily forging ahead.
That's a hard fight Blun and Doyle
are making for the Savannah post
office. The members of the Georgia
delegation In congress say it is a re
publican fight, and are seeping hands
oft.
Tile Crovatt end e>f the senatorial
fight, seems to he decidedly on the
upward tendency and from all indi
cations the judge will represent tiio
Fourth district in the tipper house of
the legislature.
A southern agriculturist named

all indications there will certainly be
an explosion In this family.
Since the supreme court of Georgia
has nut itself on record ou the ques
tion of trusts it seems to us that At
torney General Wright has & fine op

We refer to the beef trust.
The question of registration should
be an important one with the Glynn
county voter. The books will only
remain open a few days longer, and
you cannot vote in the county pri
maries without first registering.
Tlio Montgomery Advertiser says
that Eve’s fig leaf was really a
"mother hubbard" wrapper. There
you go; no wonder a great many peo

whale. How these thing* do grow.
The proposition to erect a monu
ment in Boston to Gen. B. F. Butler
has called out a peculiarly sarcastic
letter from a correspondent of the
Boston Transcript. He proposes a
"little ring of statues to celebrities"
of the Butler stripe, and among those
he named to be thus honored are
Satan, Benedict Arnold, Aaron Burr,
Guiteau aud Czolgosz, Opposition to
Gen. Butler die* hard, even In New
England.
AN IMPORTANT RULING.
The Albany Herald In discussing
a recent decision of the Supreme
court of Georgia, which in a great
measure, touches upon the trust ques
tion, says:
“Our telegraphic dispatches brifiy
reported yesterday the handing down
of a decision by the Supreme court
of Georgia in which It was held that
the efforts of certain drug firms of
Atlanta to prevent a certain pharmacy
from purchasing goods from whole
sale houses were illegal under the
common law.
This is one of the most important
and far-reaching decisions handed
down by our supreme court in some
time.
The case under consideration was
one with which the newspaper read
ers of the state are more or less fa
miliar. It was that of the Jacobs
Pi.aimacy company against the At
lanta Retail Druggists’ association,
Jacobs charging that, because he sold
drugs at cut prices, other druggists
had conspired against him to prevent
him from purchasing goods.
The case was won by Jacobs in
the lower court ami when nnnoale,.
to the supremo court the same decis
ion was made. The supreme court
held that the Georgia anti trust law,
passed in 1896, was unconstitutional,
but said that, under the common law,
such (Coußplraleies and trusts have
prevented, competition were illegal
and coutrary to public policy.
The druggists who were ..ghting
Jacobs were enjoined from doing so
further.”
Tills ruling of the court while in
volving only one •-'peelfio case in At
lanta, is as the Herald says far-reach
ing In its general effect, and Is de
stined to cut a material figure in fu
ture litigation of that kind.
Considering that he is a caoinet of
ficer of an expansionist administra
tion, Secretary Shaw spoke very
frankly at Pittsburg the other day in
referring to the SpanisliJAmenioau
war. “DisguiKo it as we will.' Vie said,
“deny we may, the element „f
self-interest was a factor in the equa
tion In 1898. We were masters of our
own markets and were reaching out
for new ones. Yes, commercialism,
it You please, had touched us, and so
it was that our self-interest as well
as our unselfishness was appealed to.”
This view may represent a scheming
element among the politicians and cor
porations, hut It does not represent
the American people generally who
Tielieved it was a war for humanity.
