The News Publishing Company de sires It to be distinctly understood that all legal advertisements must be paid for In advance. We cannot afTord to devote our space to such advertise ments and wait on the courts for the money. Every deliberative civil body in Eng land, even down to the town councils, is provided with n mace, which is brought forth with solemn ceremony end placed on the table before the de liberations begin. In one or two city conneils a candlestick of sliver is add 'd to tlie mace, and acts passed in the absence of these objects are supposed to be illegal. Many years ago, when John J. In galls, the brilliant Kansan, was a mem ber of the senate, oleomargarine was a bone of contention. The debate led In galls to utter one of those epigrammat ic sentences which made him famous. “I have never, to my knowledge, tasted oleomargarine,” said Ingalls, ‘‘but I have stood In the presence of genuine butter with awe for Its strength and reverence for its antiquity.” “Such a confusing 'variance In the pronunciation of ‘Hiawatha’ exists both In dictionaries and In the speech of educated men and women,” writes Elizabeth A. Wit hey in The Ladles' Home Journal, "that 1 have asked Miss Longfellow how tile word is pronounc ed by the poet’s family. She says tlie pronunciation which she always beard from the poet himself is Hi-a-wa tba, the ‘l’ pronounced as it Is in ‘machine* or ‘pique.’ the second ‘a’ pronounced ns It is In ‘far’ or In ‘father.’ ” When William It. Travers was in the directorate of the New York Central railroad. Jay Could was running the Erie in opposition, and Ids manage ment of that system betrayed a con stant and intimate knowledge of what was going on in the Central’s star chamber. Commodore Vanderbilt was naturally exasperated, and one day. after expressing bow helpless he found himself to outwit his rival, be turned to Travers with the query: "Well, Hilly, how can we stop Gould from getting knowledge of what we are doing?” “W-w-why,” suggested the genial wit—“w-w-why d-dont you m m-make him a d-d-director of N-N-New York C-C-Central?” Some deivor into the musty old rec ords of Harvard has brought to light an amusing provision with which one of the college’s eighteenth century friends coupled what was for his time a very generous bequest to the Cam bridge university. Mr. Thomas Brattle was the testa tor’s name, and his interest in Harvard evidently extended to the individual members of its undergraduate body, for after leaving £”00. then the equiv alent of about $3,000, to the college for its general uses his will gives half a crown to every student belonging to it who should attend Ills funeral. Unfortunately no account of Mr. Brattle’s obsequies is extant, but there can be little doubt that the occasion was made solemn by the presence of a large number of “chief mourners” and that good wishes for the deceased were generally and feelingly expressed. It Is an Interesting fact that when ineu from a state are elected by op posite parties their differences are nev er so personal as if elected by the same party and one of them afterwards changes his position. Take Mcl.aurin and Tillman as an example. The feel ing between them Is more bitter than between either and a party opponent. The same is true as to MeComas and Wellington. There have been other in stances in the past of a similar nature, though it did not become so pronounc ed as exhibited by the Maryland and South Carolina senators. Teller's with drawal from the Republican party caused a coolness between himself and Wolcott. The same was true with liubois and Slump of Idaho. In these cases it never cropped out openly, al though generally understood by those who knew them well. CHARLESTONS QUEER CHURCH. The only church in the world so far as is known that is also a lighthouse is St. Philip's church, Charleston, S. C. St. Philip’s, which is one of the* oldest churches iu America, is known as the “Westminster abbey of South Caroli na,” because within and about its walls so many distinguished men lie buried, including John C. Calhoun. The history of the old church is closely interwoven with that of South Carolina, and many of tiie most celebrated events in the history of the province are connected with iL It is one of the sights of Charleston, and strangers are always taken to sec It and shown its graves and monu ments. The most remarkable feature of the old church, however, is the fact that its lofty steeple serves the purpose of n lighthouse and is used to guide tin* Seafarer and mariner safely into the port of Charleston. The use of the stee ple as a lighthouse dates back to 1804, When the United States lighthouse de partment succeeded by dint of repeated efforts in inducing the vestry of the old church to allow a lament to be placed in the upper story of the steeple to be used as a range light for veso'ls entering the harbor t.trough the jetties at its mouth. The light used is very powerful and is placed at an altitude of about 125 feet above the ground, so that it is easily visible thirty miles at sea. Ships making for Charleston harbor tit. night always keep a sharp lookout for St. Philip’s light anil as soon as they sight It get it into line with the beacon on Port Sumter and then make a straight away run for the mouth of the jetties and up through them into the liarbot of Charleston. St. Philip’s church steeple is eons',tier ed one of the handsomest architec turally in the world and always at tracts the eye of strangers coloring Charleston from the sea by its com mantling height and artistic propor tions.—St. Louis Republic. SENATOR MASON, S BILL. Senator .Mason is a good nntured man and willing to accommodate almost anyone, therefore lie has introduced a hill “by request” to es’nbii:it a depart ment of physical culture, with a secre tary in the cabinet, it is one of the crank propositions that find their way Into congress, but it is Interesting to pee what this particular bill would have tlie government do. i’nder flic bill the “secretary of physical eullnre" shall "do everything that he ran with in the limits of good com mini sense to advam-e the cause of ‘physical culiure.’ to the Individual improvement of .the human race as well as to tie- improve meat of the general coiidii on:; nn I r Which people live, prosper ami pr-'long llielr usefulness, aiming to sc are e.s peelally Saturday half liolida.vs and shorter hours throughout the entire year for till public workers, establish ing public outing periodicals, public fountains of pure drinking water, pub lic playgrounds, public parks, public gymnasiums, public theaters, public baths, public laundries, and so forth, as object lessons in patriotism and public spirit for all the people who may coma within (lie reach of thole ennobling and elevating influences." The ruby 1.-t vaftied highest when It contains the least azure. The largest ruby that history speaks of belonged to Elizabeth of Austria, (lie wife of Charles IX. It was almost as big as a hen's egg. The virtues attributed to rallies are to banish sadness, to repress luxury and to drive away annoying thoughts. At the' same rime-it sym bollzes cruelty, anger and carnage, as well as boldness and braver.; A change in Its color announces a calamity, hut when the trouble is over it regains its primitive luster. no who refuses to play second fiddle has no elmuee to become loader of an orchestra -- - Why Pay Rent When the Same Mon ey Will Purchase a Home.
