Elsewhere In this Issue will be found petition for charter of the Cumber land club, which promises to be a pleasant social organization. The new tabernacle, now being erected in this city will be the means of bringing a number of notable con ventions during the summer. A solid cargo of brick, for the new public building, arrived by the schoon er Reynolds yesterday, which means work will be rapidly pushed. Oapt. Wiley Williams made many friends in Brunswick and it is safe to predict that Glynn will give him her vote in the race for prisoner commis sioner. ————— • The senatorial race is getting along nicely. Both candidates are manag ing their campaigns in a good natured fashion and the usual bitterness is conspicuous for its absence. Tile traveling public will be pleased to know that tho usual Sunday excur sions from Brunswick to Savanna'll and return for SI,OO will be on shortly. The first of the season will . e inaugu rated Sunday. The Phoenix club held its annual mectilng Monday night and compli men ted fine old board of officers by re-ejecting It. The Phoenix is one of Brunswick's most popular organi zations. Fourteen ves Js was the record for Brunswick yesteri.ay and one tug boat brought in five at one time, and another was a close second with four. Pretty good record for this season of the year. Petition for incorporation of the Brunswick Paint, Oil and Varnish Cos. appears elsewhere in this issue. The incorporators are among Brunswick’s most progressive business men and the success of the enterprise is ns hured. lie t The new executive committe select cd at the mans meeting yesterday is exceptionally good one. It bears no ear mark of partisan politics, is made up of representative citizens, and we are sure that the interests of the party will be safe in their keeping. Capt. 1). (i. Purse is on tint rigid line in his advocacy of a syrup factory for Brunswick, lie gave) the board of trade a good, sound talk at its meet ing yesterday, and that body iias ap pointed a committee to investigate as to the advantage of erecting the fac ory in time for the coming crops. It is to be hoped the matter wilt culmi nate in the building of the factory. It is understood that a joint moot ing of the officials of the Atlantic Coast i.ne and the Plant System will he held m Savannah May 12 to outline a policy and formulate a system of ac counts and otherwise arrange for the formal merger of the two lines. The employes are. of course, on the an xious bench, as to their heads, but the Brunswick employes of the Plant System seem to be on "Easy street." They are a taithful lot and deserve to be retained in their positions. CURIOUS KOREANS. One of the iiiost curious customs in Korea marks the advent of the new year. This is the battle with stones, participated In by Inhabitants of Seoul. At a spot about a mile and a half out side the city walls, on the main road to the Han river, the people assemble by thousands either as witnesses of ... par ticipants in this truly reinarknUe exhi bition of warlike good will. ! previ ous arrangement piles of si" > a'e in readiness, all carefully selected and of a convenient size. Without previous selection of com bnlants the participants form fin :i selves into opposing armies, about the only (nullification for service being purently tlie ability to hurl a stone at the advancing forces of the enemy. At first the stone throwing is at long range and uninteresting, but as (la- throw!::.: continues the forces draw nearer, and the light waxes fast and furious. tun being detailed to collect the si ore’s into heaps again or fetch fresh aiancmi 1 for the tiring line. Then tho si comes, the two bodies im-t. lb r ■ • rush es are made, stones are di.car V !. and knives and clubs are freely 1 The clash of weapons, the cereania of t‘i combatants, the surging mms of men some being trampled to death, now falling, now struggling to their feet, the blood (lowing from numerous oil's tic Whole goes to make a pie! are that de picts anything hot the joy we attribute to the coming of anew year. The light Is k>‘pt up until the clang of the great city bell telis Ihc combatants that it is time to return home. I’rrlmps the most singular feature of the celebration is Hint during the remaining eleven mouths of the year the Korean is as amiable a j •iv.oii as can lie found in any country, and by some writers the average Kim mi is characterized as tile most abject cow aid on the face of the eurih. But, cowards or no coward-:, the I Korean people still indulge, as tin y have for years, in this aliinial warlike welcome of tlie new year. Indeed it is legal in Korea to fight not only on New Year’s day, but during tlie first moon or month of the year. Tlie cus tom has become a national institution, sanctioned by the government and patronized by tlie king anil ihe nobili ty. The police attend tlie battles, but merely to keep order among tlie specta tors. Fighting is tlie Korean’s privi lege with the advent of each new year, and he is expected to exercise that privilege to the extent of his ability if lie would bo accounted a good, country loving Korean •’* *“ Why Pay Rent When the Same Mon ey Will Purchase a Home.
