A correspondent of the New York
Times insists that “hard times” and
periods of prosperity alternate almost
with thej same regularity that the
moon changes, and that the republi
cans, recognizing tills fact, consented
to Cleveland’s second election in order
that the democrats might shoulder the
onus of th era of depression that
they foresaw.
In a recent speech Senator Carmack
said that General Funston was the
greatest captain who ever weilded the
jawbone of an ass. This reminds Rep

PITY FOR WILHELMINA.
The joy of the Dutch people over
the apparent convalescence of their
fair young Queen has been turned
back to deepest grief by the latest an
nouncement from the palace where she
has been ill that her condition is again
<‘r. ueal as a result of a premature
confinement. In the dark hour of sus
pence for her faithful Dutch subjects
the world desires to share. Though
it has not the same cause tor grief
as the people of Holland, it has at the
•east a heart full of sympathy for the
little Queen and prays for her ulti
mate and complete recovery will speed
round the globe. No other sovereign
of this generation has been so univer
sally beloved. An orphan girl heiress
to a thorne. trained in sensible fashion
•>V a sensible mother, she long ago
gained a hold upon our affections
which was increased uy the circum
stances of her marriage and the re
porls that she had been made unhappy
by tin* conduct of her cnosen spouse.
In these hours of dire affliction and
suffering, there is a world wide pity
for her.
Stic is the last of her family in the
direct line and should she pass away
her successor would then be a Ger
man prince, the Grand Duke of Saxe-
Welmar-Eisenach. This young man,
26 years old, would Inherit through
the grandmother. Princes Sophie of
the Netherlands, who married Charles
Alexander "Grand Duke of Saxe-Wei
rnar-Eisenach. Holland is a strictly
constitutional monarchy, hut under
fhe constitution the sovereign has
large powers, and in the absence of a
thorough understanding with his min
isters and legislative assembly might
make himself extremely disagreeable.
The people of Holland have little af
fection for Germany, owing to their
apprehension that the Kaiser will in
some way gobble them up and annex
them to his Empire. They have cor
dially hateld the union of their girl
Queen with the German Prince Henry,
and they linve an abiding provision
Wetman-Eisenach becomes their ruler
they will be Germanized thorugh and
through. This consideration adds to
the national grief over the illness of
WUhelmia.
Advance Prayer*.
A young Germantown mother in put
ting her live-year-old son to bed no
ticed that ho clambered under the cov
ers without saying his prayers. Shu
grew reproachful. “Why, Warren,
mother never knew you to forget your
prayers before.”
“indeed, mother,” was tlie reply, “I
didn't forget. Grace and I said them
for four nights during the rain yester
day, when we couldn’t play. We
would have got through the whole
