SOUTH AND THE PRESIDENCY.
The Washington Star thinks that
It is about time for the democrats to
consider a man for the presidency.
Referring to the present generation, it
says: “The only flag they have ever
known is the Stars and Stripes; and
how loyal the men of the sout’a, es
pecially the young men, now are to
that flag was shown in the war with
Spain. Why, then, should not a man
of that stamp offer for tine proud honor
of the presidency, when his section of
the country casts eight-tenths of the
eleetorial vote necessary to the elect-'
ion of a democrat to that office ?
Have not the democratic leaders
from the south affeed themselves at
national conventions long enough ?
Are they not warranted by character,
by capacity and by training, to take
place at the head of the procession,
Instead of meekly bringing up the
rear under orders of Tammany hall?"
Commenting on this the Griffin News
and Sun says:
"Well, we have got a southern man
ai the head of the most important
part of the party organization, and
there is no telling how much further
we may advance in two years more.
Fi r our part there is no man whom we
would lather see in the presidency
than the same Jim Griggs; and no
man that, we know of who would
to name a pri slddfit.
This is pretty sentiment, hut we
fear the time is still away ahead in
future when the sotitli can hope
to anme a president.
Such men as Tillman and such
scenes us the one in which he was
tin- star player in the senate Wednes
day last, only serves to make tho
probability of such a thing more r
mote. ,
Semi) ,r Clark, of Montana, who
writes bigger chucks ihan any other
man in Washington, is fond of sing
ing. He has a swenft, clear tenor
voice, vviiii li is not strong, but very
pleasing to a small company. After
he.had piled millions upon millions
he employed a vocal teacher, an I the
result is that he is fond of singing lur
a small company.
