Mt. Pelee seems to be still ma<l. f Stand by every, home industry. Our streets must be kept in good oon-dition. The Ohio republican convention is a genuine Hanna love feast. The Americus Herald calls Wu Ting Fang "he of the Are alarm, name.” The taxpayers of Tampa will soon be hjappy. That election Is only a short time off. As the liate of the primary grows near interest in the gubernatorial con test increases. The first car of watermelons is ex pected this week and the colored folk already have the smiles. The home Tribune says “the most appropriate tune to play at a golf game is "after the ball* Editor Peasant Stovall is throwing boquets at the Georgia’' poach. Wu mean the Elberta kind. Senator Hanna la running things at his little convention in Ohio. A man has a perfect right to run his own business. Millard Lee, who murdered Miss Hatties, says he killed her because he loved her. He had a curious way of showing his love. Our dispatches tell ns this morning another horrible tale from the island of Martinique. The pdbple who live in the vaeinity of such danger can ex pect death at any moment. The News knows a local merchant who places most of his Insurance in Now V ork, keeps his hank account elsewhere and actually sends out of the city for articles for his personal use. This is the kind who kill a city. Tliet Cleveland Plain Deamr sajfs: 1 hat little game of ping-pong be two I > Quebec ami Montreal in which Oiwu and Gay nor take the place of the celluloid spheres, must be highly enu rtainlng to the lawyers who have a dnaiK'ial interest in it” IT NEEDS ATTENTION. TJie News desires to direct the at tention of the city council to the de plorable condition of Bay street from Monk south. Over half the merchandise which we get is hauled over this particular part of Bay and its terrible condition is not only an eye-sore to all but a hardship on those who are compelled to use the street for any purpose whatever. There ae a number of holes not less than fifteen feet wide and six in ches deep and in some places it really looks as if had never had the pleas ure of meeting the oyster shell. We hope council will take this mat ter up at once. IN CONSTANT DANGER, The News cannot understand why those people reaiding Hear Mont Pelee and other places in the danggenoua district do not seek other parts. From the opinion of learned 'scien tists we are led to believe that these death dealing agencies are Habile to erirpHon at any moment. Professor Robert T. Hill, United States government geologist and head of the expedition sent by the National Geo graphical Society, has Just come in from a daring and prolonged investi gation of the volcanic activity In Mar tinique. Professor Hill chartered a steamer and carefuUy exiamined the coast as far north as Port De Macouba, at the extreme end of the island, mak ing frequent landings. After landing at Le Proehuer, 5 miles north of St. Pierre, he walked through an area of active volcauism to the latter place and made a minute examination of the various phenomena disclosed. Professor Hill is the first and only mau who has set foot in the area of craters, fissures and fumaroles, and bee s of his high position as a scien. tist nls story is valuable. In addition to his work of investigation the pro fessor rescued in his steamer many poor people of Le Precheur who had ventured back after deserting tjieir homes and found themselves ip awful danger. He reports as follows: "Tho zone of the catastrophe In Mar tinique forms an elongated oval, con taining on land about 8 square miles of destruction. Thjs, oval 1b partly over the sea. The land part Is bound ed by lines running from Le Prechuer to the peak of Mont Pelee, thence curving around to Carbet. There were three well marked zones: First, a cen ter of annihilation, In which life, vege table and animal, was utterly destroy ed. “The greater northern part of St. Pierre was In this zone. Second, a zone of singeing, blistering flame, which also was fatal to all life, kill ing all men and animals, burning the leaves on the trees and scorching hut not utterly destroying the trees them selves. Third, a large outer, non de structive zone of ashes, wherein some vegetation was injured. The focus of annihilation was the new crater mid way between the sea and the peak of Mont Pelee, where now exists anew area of active voleanism with hun dreds of fumaroles or miniature vol canoes. The new crater Is now vomit ing. black, hot mud, which is falling into the sea. Both craters, the old and the new, are active. Mushroom shaped steam explosions constantly ascend from the old crater, while heavy, ash laden clouds float horizon tally from the new crater. The old ejects steam, smoke, mud, pumice and lapilll, but no molten lava. “The salient topography of the re gion is unaltered. The destruction of St Pierre was due to the new crater. The explosion had great superficial force, acting in radial durations, as is evi denced by the dismounting and carry ing for yards the guni In the battery on the hill south of Hi- Pierre, and the colonial statue of tfiq Virgin in the same locality, and also by the condi tion of the ruined houses in St. Pierre. “According to the testimony of some persons there was an accompanying flame. Others think the Incandescent cinders and the force of their ejection were sufficient to cause the destruc tion. This must be investigated. lam now following the nature of this hill.” This Is the first positive scientific statement based on observed facts. Professor Hill has now started on horseback for the volcano. He will study the whole affected area and will try to get to both craters. He will surely visit Morne Rouge and the slope of Mont Pelee. The undertaking is very hazardous, as eruptions may oc cur at any moment, as one did May 20. Professor Hill knows the risk he takes, but only way to discover ex actly what has happened is to go to the crater itself, or as near it as pos sible. He will be gone two days. Fort de France Is nearly deserted. A new source of fright is fear that a tidal wave may come. A wave eight feet high would certainly destroy Fort de France and possibly cause enor mous loss of life. The weather is lowering and rainy. The south winds carry the smoke and ashes from the volcano away from Fort de France. W. E. DEMPSTYR Manager.
