We cannot afford to devote our Bpace to *uch advertise ment* and wait on the court* for th* money. Savannah had a hot time yesterday. Senator Hanna carried that Ohio convention around in his vest pocket. The territory around Brunswick is growing as fast as cassava fed stock. The jpweet girl graduate is now having her inning. The summer girl, next. i. Qemesial Wheeler has gone abroad. Is It possible that he 1b to see the cor onation? Congressman Brantley has certainly! done good work for Brunswick and the entire Eleventh district. We certainly want every Brunswick citizen to take the News and we are more than anxious to have them pay for It. Rev. Sam P. Jones has done Dupont real mean. He promised to take the stump for him and now he fails to do so. I | ———l ii n ■ m ■ ■-ii—miM ■— ■ Senator Mcl.aurin's kind of dem ocracy did not take well in South Car olina and Roosevelt must ■aavo him from political retirement. There seems to be some dispute about the salary General Wood ree ceived. The Cubans should be satis fied if the General left anything at all in the treasury. Those who escaped the terrible disaster ou the island of Martinique will bind the United States a great country: and a place where they are safe from Pelee and like occurrences. THE EARLY CLOBING. Home of the ladies and a few of the clerks have criticised the News on ’its expressions regarding the closing of the stores at 6 p. m. and we are sure that they are a little unjust with, u. , 1 ! The News reiterates its former statements and is still of the opinion that 6 o’clock is entirely too early to close t.he stores and we will give our reasons for our position in the mattjer. We all know that the merchant gets a great deal of buslnee from the work ing man—how about those who do mot get off until after 6? How about the housewife who can not possibly finish her work before the closing hour? And the transient business—those who arrive on the afternoon boats and trains. How about them? They say the Savannah merchant.* even close up bkore 6. That has not a thing to do with us. Savannah can do as she pleases and we can man age our little affairs. But It looks like the proposition has been accepted by the merchants and they will close at 6 SHARP. if you reach the stone at 6.01 there Hit -nothing doing." They will tell you that you can’t come in. M. Kaiser has engaged the services of a Gatling gun squad and you must keep ot after SIX. Mr. J,evy has obtained the battery of Mrs. Carrie Nation and you l&ow what it means to enter that store after SIX. Miala Slater. Mr. Roberts and Mr. Doerflinger are near the Reserves’ armory and for the sake of those who love you don’t try to get into these places after SIX. Mr. McClure, Mr. Hoffman and Mrs. Isaac are going to organize a military company of their own andto even think of entering these stores would be dangerous after SIX. Mr. Heller and his numerous broth ers, armed with repeating riflles will see that you do not. gehinto their! place after SIX. Mr. Elkan is safe—Clarence has al ready ordered a uniform and a gun. This means keep out after SIX. Constant Miller has “Oeech" and his place is in no danger after SIX. Mr. Mott has charged his place wijh electricity and hie is certainly l , secure after SIX. A. Rothschild has a dog imported from Mississippi and there Is no dan ger of a customer venturing in thefei In there after SiX. Mr. McQtarvey’s force of collectors will be stationed at t'ne door and .hois certainly safe after SIX. The News has told the public of the implements of destruction and it y.ou ge(t hurt it is your own fault. Hear in mind the fact that your money is not good after SIX. And tho poor downtrodden clerk, with taxes, rent, insurance and other things to pay, lihe can now get oft and at SIX and figure how to spend the next afternoon. ing shrdidl 1 bghkyoapq qqrkq qqqqb And the "hand-me down” merchant is now in his glory. Hie can soil af ter the other merchants have closed. This SIX o’clock arrangement is a good thing, we don’t think. The merchants of Brunswick know their business and if it suits thorn to close at 1 o’clock we are satisfied. PROPOSED STREET CAR LINE. The fact that a franchise has been granted to a party of northern busi noßs men for the construction and operation of an electric car line on the streets of the city of Brunswick and! tlile further fact that one of this party has been here anil states posi tively that the line will he built, makes It almost certain that within a very short timie we wll he riding through the streets of our city In the very best style of modern street locomotion. fJVie gentlemen who are to build the; line ask for and shoulld have the cooperation of evtery loyal citizen and tho Nows is of tine opinion that they will have the help pi all because it is certainly due them.
