BENNET FOR JUSTICE.
T'ai- announcement of Cue coining
resignation of Mr. Justice Lewis, of
Georgia's supreme court, has been re
ceive.! in Brunswick, and almost in
stantaneously the name of a well
known Brunswick jurist lias been
mentioned In local political circles in
connection with this very high office.
It must be conceded that South
Georgia should be more fiiully repre
sented in this most august tribunal
in the state and that Brunswick and
this unction has a distinguished citi
zen who, by rare legal attainment,
eminenent ability and wide judicial
experience, is in every way'qualified
for the office there can he no ques
tion.
Glynn county Tins, in recent years,
furnished one member of the supreme
court, and tils matchless record as a
member of that body shines out with
pronounced distinction.
We have still another, who, like
Judge Spencer Atkinson, has served
as judge of his circuit, and his record
in this capacity is without blemish.
We present to the people of Georgia
Judge Joseph W. Benet, of the county
of Glynn, and in so doing it is with a
pardonable degree of pride that we
direct attention to him as a South
Georgian worthy of the great judicial
ermine of rue supreme court.
We do not speak for Judge Bennot.
but Tor ourselves and the people, of
this circuit, wo feel that we can offer
as good material as can ho found in
Georgia.
It’s up to the people.
MILITARY MAY COME.
The Fifth Georgia regiment, with
headquarters in At.anta, is anxious to
go into encampment at one of Bruns
w ieka’ seaside resorts next month, and
to l hat end <lll4 detailed a committee
to inspect both Cumberland and St.
Simon and report as to the respec
tive qualifications of these places.
Tne coining of this regiment would
mean considerable to Brunswick and
her merchants and it is to be hoped
that our people will cooperate with
tliis committee as to the subject mat
ter of their mission. The committee
Atlantta last night and will submit
their report *t‘ a 'coming meeting of
visited both resorts and returned to
the regimental officers to be held in
that city.
Would it not be a good idea for our
people to consider this mailer?
GUERRY'S POOR SHOWNIG.
Since the primary wo have seen no
statement from Dupont Guerry as to
why he was so badly defeated. We
suppose he can give no ejcplauattnm.
but to the thinking mau it U plainly
evident that tine cause of his poor
showing is the fact that the people
of Georgia as still true to the dem
00 ratio principle—local option and
they are against the kind of cam
paign Mr. Guerry favored.
They have shown Mr. Gueryy that
they are againsst pronadtion and we
believe no candidate In the next ton
years will attempt to win the gover
norship on that sort of platform.
Philippine volcanoes.
Of interest In connection with the re
cent volcanic eruptions In the West
Indies Is the report of George F.
Becker on the geology of the Philip
pine Islands, which has Just appeared
In Part 111. of.the Twenty-first Annual
Report of the United States Geological
Survey, and which contains a review
of everything bearing upon the geology
of these Islands.
The report deals In general with the
geologic and economic features of the
Islands, from extant reports on the sub
ject, and from studies In the field, so
far as they could he carried on during
the disturbed period of 181)8-00, though
geologising under arms and with a mil
itary escort was found to be more ex
citing than profitable.
In many respects the Philippine Is
lands so closely resemble the West In
dies, especially In being the scene of
violent past and present volcanic en
ergy, that the chapter of the report on
the active and extinct volcanoes of the
archipelago is at this time particularly
Interesting. While It Is possible to
visit but few of these mountains owing
to the hostility of the natives, much
valuable information from local and
other sources was collected. Forty
nine of thy eruptive mountains were he
cated among the Islands, and their al
titudes and the dates of their eruptions
Obtained. Conspicuous among them is
Mount Apo, the higliesl mountain in
the Philippines, which rises 10,701 feet
above the level of the sea. At Caml
guin do Mindanao, one of the most In
teresting Volcanoes of tlic gaoup, a cone
nearly 2,(HK) feet in height has risen
) since 1871 over wlmt was formerly a
lake, the basin of which was, presuma
bly, an ancient crater. Mayon, or the
volcano of Allaiy, is said to l.e the
most symmetrically beautiful cone in
the world; and the famous Teal vol
cano, situated on a small volcanic is
land in the lake of Bonbon, is readily
accessible from Manila.
The accounts of the eruptions of
these and other volcanoes of the group
bear a striking resemblance to those
of the reeeut outburst of Mont Pelee
In Martinique. Of an eruption which
occurred In the year liiil near Jolo
the report quotes, “The darkness and
atmospheric disturbance were so great
that the people of Jolo could not per
ceive whence came the stuff which fell
from heaven upon them.” And in one
of tlie numerous eruptions at Tanl loud
detonations like discharges of artillery
were heard, incandescent stones were
thrown out, and a great lire ran like a
river across the Island. The fire then
shifted Into Lake Bonbon, throwing
up water and ashes in Immense muss
es. "The water grew hot and black,
fish were strewn on the beaches as if
they had been cooked, and the air was
so full of sulphurous smells and the
odor of dead fishes that the Inhabit
ants sickened." At ope of the erup
tions of Albay, that in ISI4, 1,200 lives
are said to have been lost.
In drawing comparisons between the
volcanoes of the Philippines and those
of the Dutch East Indies Mr. Becker
notes that "Papandnyang, In west
Java, had a great eruption in 1772, de
stroying forty villages. Galnng Gung
In 1822 destroyed 111 villages, and it
Is some measure of the violence of the
Krnkatoa explosion of ISS3 that over
80,000 people perished.”

Women and Jewels.
Jewels, candy, powers, man —that
is the order of a womans preferences.
Jewels form a magnet of mtghfy pow
er to the average woman. Even that
greatest of all jewels, health, is often
ruined in the strenuous efforts to make
or save the money to purchase them.
If a woman wu. risk her health to
get a coveted geiff, ,en let her fortify
herself against the iusiduous conse
quences of coughs, colds ami bronchia
affections by the regular use of Dr.
Boschee’s German Syrup. It will
promptly arrest consumption in its
early stages and heal the affected
iuugs and bronchial tubes and drive
the dread disease from the system.
It is not a cure-all, but it is a certain
cure for coughs, colds and all bron
