Fruit Ruri.d Year* Ax‘> YY.nt SMtl Good to Eut. While digging for the foundation of a now house In Galesburg, Mieli., re cently a singular and timely discovery was made, says tlic Republic. While the workmen were excavating at a depth of about live feet from the surface Mr. Swinton, flic owner of the property, noticed several balls of earth mingled with tlie soil that was being removed. From curiosity ho examined one of them and upon removing the ad hering outside coating was duml'ound eil to discover an apple inclosed. Oth ers of tho specimens were examined with similar results. As it is positively known that the ground there had not been disturbed for at least ten years the matter was a mystery until Ferry Somers, an aged citizen, remembered that In the early history of the village a tannery stood upon tlie spot anil that after the latter was abandoned the hind became tem porarily a garden. It is supposed that the soil impreg nated with the liquid used for tanning purposes years since retained its pre servative qualities and thus preserved tlie buried apples, which were still fresh and eatable after ten years. They were of tlie Northern Spy variety and made excellent pies. Neckties Foe Summer. The shops show many new ties for morning and afternoon wear. The butterfly bow will only lie used for evening dress, and sparingly then, as the white lawn evening tie, plain and with square ends, is tlie one which is generally worn, ltlaok satin and silk ties for dinner peats have square ends. against said Robert Clark for taxiv due said city for the years 18!)!), 19(H) and 1901.
