It looks very much like Judge Ben

The sidewalk in front of the Clay

sembles a potato pate'n.
They -say the earth’s crust is very
thin under Wall street. So are some
of the streea's schemes.
Say what you please but there Is

The people of Bartow seem to be
anxious that Rev. Sam Jones should
understand that religion and polities
won't mix.
The fact that Col. Ketiil paid his
own way in the gubernatorial primary
seems to worry the “squib" writer of
the Atlanta Journal.
When Sam Jones returns to his

The treasury department has issued
a monograph entitled “Commercial
Africa in 1901,” which contains many
interesting facta as to the industrial
and commercial status of the dark
continent. The commerce of Africa
according tto this publication amounts
to over $700,000,000, of which imports
furnish $429,000,000. Undoubtedly
much ot the commerce is unrecorded
in any way.
IT IS TIME FOR ACTION.
Tne News has, from time to time,
directed the attention of the eity coun
cil to the deplorable condition of the
sidewalks of our principal streets and
the time has now come when the pride
or our city fathers would exert Itself
and some action should ho the result.
There is a city ordinance requiring
property owners to keep the walks in
front of the premises in good condi
tion and we see no reason why the
law, line others, should not be en
forced.
Gentlemen of council it 1s up to

BRYAN A DEAD ISSUE.

The democratic party, in casting
about for a presidential candidate,
-teems to have overlooked Mr. Bryan
altogether and it is well.
He ha led the party on two ocea
slons and each time wo met. with de
feat. There is'no doubting the fact
that Mr. Bryan ts one of tthe brain
iest, men on the American continent,
hut his unreasonable worship of free
silver and the tenacity with which lie
expense-! the cause forever has kept
hint from the white house.
Free silver is populistic and the
latter is political death.
For presidential timber we must
look for a Hill, an Gluey, a Gorman,
but. Bryan—never.
OIL AS FUEL.
The Matson Navialion Company’s
steamer Enterprise, the pioneer deep
water oil-burning steamship in the
Pacific, has returned from Hilo, Ha
waii Territory, completing her initul
round trip with the new fuel. She
was outfitted Ith tanks and oil-hurtl
ing furnaces as an experiment. Her
tanks carry 750 tons, or 3,000 barrels
of crude oil. They were supposed to
have sufficient capacity to carry her
the round voyage. The estimate was
a correct one for she reached port
with a full cargo of 2,500 tons of
sugar and enough crude oil still in
tier tanks to carry her a long distance
further. The trip was made on sched
ule time each way.
Not only has the fuel bill Of the
Enterprise been greatly reduced, Hut
the'voyage was made with a crew of
three firemen instead of the twelve
employyd when the vessel was a coal
burner. Her experience is tints likely
to influence the entire 'steam fleet
sailing to and from this port.
The Oceanic steamship Mariposa
has had her furnaces altered for oli
, burning, and tanks have taken the
place of her coal hunkers. Other
steamships are sure to make similar
changes, which expand
the market for the crude oil product
