AT SARATOGA, N. Y.
Many Costly Buildings Went Up In
Smoke, Among Them the Arcade Ed
ifice and the Theater Saratoga—Fire
Chief Injured.
Saratoga, N. Y., June 10. —One per
son was killed, one fatally injured, two
others severely hurt and a number are
reported missing as the result of a tiro
here early today. The property de
stroyed was valued at $300,000, with
estimated insurance of $175,000.

Fire Chief Shadwick, badly burned
about head; fatally it is feared.

Servant girl, name unknown.
The missing:
Mrs. Owens.
Mrs. M. C. Hart.
Mrs. Ahern.

Mrs. Morris.
Miss Morris and Miss Ida Foster.
Mrs. Mabie, who was burned to
death, was asleep in her apartments in
the Arcade.
The lire started in the Arcade build
ing on Broadway, and destroyed that
building, together with the Shacked
lord and the Theater Saratoga, located
In the Citizen’s National bank build
ing. That portion of the latter build
ing occupied by the bank was damaged
only by water. The contents of the
safes and deposit vaults remain in
tact.
Fortunately there was no wind, oth
erwise the tire, which was in the heart
of the city and not. far from several of
the largest hotels, might have devel
oped into a general conflagration. By
hard work the firemen succeeded in
checking the flames and at 5:25 a. m.
the Are was pronounced to be under
control.
Chief Shadwick was injured in res
cuing Mrs. Hart from one of the burn
ed buildings.
The missing persons were tenants
of the Arcade building. The burned
buildings were occupied by offices and
stores, among them being the post
office, the Daily Saratogian. the West
ern Union Telegraph company, Sara
toga and Boston Telegraph company.

Laffoou, a half-witted man, killed Ins
wife at his home yesterday afternoon.

After he had committed the deed he
closed ttie doors of the room, locked
them and told a neighbor what lie had
done. When asked why he did it I.af

SMALL CRAFT MISSING.
Squall Off Boston Harbor May Claim
Many Victims.
Boston, June lit. —The harbor was

along the water front were besieged
today by anxious men and women,
making inquiries of friends who writ
on small craft, yesterday and had not
returned when a heavy squall swept
over the harbor between 7 and f,
o'clock last evening.
More than 20 persons are missing
this morning. The squall came very
quickly and was unusually strong, and
it is feared that small boats, heavily
loaded, would not have survived.
Steamer Makes New Record.
Plymouth, England, June 10—-Tho
North German steamer liner
Prinz Kflbelm, Captain Richter, which
sailed from New York June 3 for Cher
bourg and Bremen, via this port, ar
rived here this morning after a pas
sage of five days, 11 hours ami 32
minutes to Eddystone light, at an av
erage speed of 23.53 knots per hour,
which is the best eastward record for
speed thus far made across the At
lantic.

pope was highly delighted with Pres
Went Roosevelt's gift of a complete
set of the latter’s works and confirms
the report that the pontiff issued or

LIBERTY BELL ENROUTE HOME.
Patriotic Demonstration at Washing
ton Over Historic Relic.
Washington, June 10.—The Liberty
Bell arrived here today enroute to
Philadelphia from the Charleston expo
sition. where it has been on exhibition.
The arrival of the bell was marked
with brief patriotic exercises and thou
sands of people passed before the ear
throughout the day and viewed the
bell.
The ceremonies began by the play
ing of “The Star Spangled Banner ’
by the United States marine band.
President McFarland, of the board jf
; commissioners, then delivered an ad
dress. Chairman Wilson H. Brown re
sponded. Following this the marine
band played Sousa's “Liberty Bell."
The hell was then lifted upon the car,
while little bunches of flowers from
children placed on the car were care
fully laid on top of the bell.
The marine and other hands remain
ed through the day and played patriot,
ic selections at intervals.
The car will remain here over night
and will proceed to Philadelphia at 5
o'clock tomorrow morning.
Gubernatorial Nomination In Doubt.
Harrisburg, Pa., June 10.—The re
sult of the tight for the Republican
nomination for governor is still in
doubt, with the chances between Judge
S. W. Pennypacker, of Philadelphia,
and Attorney General J. P. Elkin and
ex-Lieutenant Governor Louis A. Wal
ter, of Scranton, claiming to hold the
balance of power. Senator Quay and
Insurance Commissioner Durham, who
have charge of Penuypai ker’s candi
dacy, still claim ho will bo nominated
on the first ballot. The state commit
tee tomorrow afternoon will make tip
the roll of delegates and decide the
contests.
