CHICAGO SANITARIUM
PROVES DEATH TRAP
These Were Suffering From Delirium
Tremens When Fire Broke Out, and
It Was Found Impossible to Remove
Them, So Fast Did Fire Spread.
Chicago, Juno 11. —Nine men and
one woman were killed and about 30
persons were injured in a fire late yes
terday afternoon which destroyed the
sanitarium conducted by the Saint
Luke society, at the corner of Wabash
avenue and Twenty-first street. The
society occupied the building which
was long known as the Hotel Woodruff
and for a brief period as the Hotel
Lancaster. By far the greater portion
of the patients received in the insti
tution were those seeking cure from
the drink habit and those who were ad
dicted to the use of drugs.
When the fire bloke out there was
on tile fifth floor a number of patients
suffering from delirium tremens and
gome who were deranged by drugs.
Several of these were strapped to their
beds and it was found impossible to
save them so rapidly did the fire
spread through the building.
List of the Dead,
Tlie list oi the dead as far as known
at present is as follows:
S. J. Newell.
Carl A. Carlson.
Joseph Harrington.
Samuel Dalzell.
Dr. J. T. Stanton.
George A. Ribbeck, Hillsdale. Mich.
W. A. Kent, alderman of the fourth
ward, Chicago,
John B, Knapman.
Mrs. M. Baumann.
B. H. Boyd, 78 years of age, a mem
ber of the medical staff of the institu
tion.
The fire originated in the basement
of the building and spread rapidly to
the upper stories through the elevator
sliaf t. The blaze was discovered by
James Newell, a grocer. He shouted
to several men to give the alarm and
to alarm the inmates of the building.
Several hurried to do this, but by the
time they reached the first floor of tiro
building the Haines had been carried to
the roof, had eaten through it and were
leaping high in ttie air.
As the cry of fire rang through the
building patients sprang from their
beds and before they could be prevent
ed several had jumped frotp the win
dows to the pavement. The fire de
partment was on the scene within a
few minutes and as the windows were
filled with people shrieking tor help
thq firemen devoted their first efforts
to save lives and allowed the lire to
burn.
While o large number of people were
being carried down the ladders by 'lie
firemen the fire got such headway that,
there was almost no chance for tlm.-e
on the upper floors of the building lo
make their escape and those which
were not suffocated were killed or bad
ly Injured by leaping from the win
dows.
Dr, (!. Mulford Silvern, chief of the
medical staff at the hospital, was ab
sent when the fire broke out. He ar
rived as the firemen began carrying
out the dead. He said that in the in
stitution were 60 patients of whom I.',
were women.
Chicago, June M.—Of the 34 per
sons injured in the St, Luke’s Society
hospital fire yesterday it is feared that

T. T. Meats, Enosburg Falls, Vt.,
badly burned about face, hands and
body.
A. W. Watties, Chicago, badly burn
ed arid bruised.
Mrs. Amelia Wilson, Chicago, badly
burned.
The other 31 injured were reported
better of their hurts, but most of tin m
were still badly shaken in their nerves
by the horror of wiiat they endured
and witnessed yesterday.
The eight men arrested last night
were still held today, including O. E
Miller, president of the St. Luke's so
ciety.
“There will he a full investigation,”
said Coroner Trager, “and if any one
of the deaths was due to negligence
the guilty person or persons will be
made to pay the penalty.”
Perhaps the most, pitiable of ail the
deaths was that, of Alderman “Blind
Billy” Kent. Not only was he blind,
but he was incased in a straight, jack
et, with his hands strapped to his
waist. Kent was an astute politician,
had been a member of the state legis
lature and was a delegate to the Re
publican national conventions of 1884,
1888 and 1892.

Teach Your Boys Typewriting.
In this da,yi of advanced ideas and
improved methods of conducting all
branches of business the use ot the
typewriter machine lias become so
universal that a young man, or wo
man seeking to secure a position
where intellect and education, rather
than bodily strength are required,
finds the knowledge of typewriting al
most an essential qualification, and
it is therefore not only commendable
in parts but it is really a dtuy they
owe their children to afford them an
opportunity of acquiring this profes
sion, or a fair knowledge of it, in or
der that should they desire, or be
forced by necessity to support them
selves, they) will enter on their bus
ihess career well equipped in this par
ticular to compete successfully for
positions where knowledge or experi
ence of this c haracter are among the
requisites!.
Stenography is also of intestimable
value to a young person desirous ot
embarking in a business career, and
the time is not far distant warn it
will he added to the curriculum of
our common schools and colleges. A
knowledge of typewriting can, how
ever. often be utilized to advantage
wilhot shorthand, whereas the reverse
is seldom the ease, while the art of
manipulating a typerwtiter is :so eas
ily acquired that any boy or girl of
ordinary intelligence can spin master
it. A father could not do his son (or
daughter; a greater service than to
place; at bis disposal a typewriter
machine, whereby ho can not only ac
quaint himself with Its u.qe, but im
prove iiis spoiling, his grammar, his
punctuating, etc., and store his mind
with much other useful and practical
informatin which will stand him in
good stead as a business man, no mat
teh what branch he may enter.
* |U! United States government,
through the mediuf of the Civil Ser
vice, is offering handsome salaries for
expert typewriters and stenograpners,
and yet many good positions remain
unfilled for the jack of them.
