Emory Speer has designated the Brunswick Dally News as the official organ of the United States Qourt, In bankruptcy proceedings, for dtjyna oounty. PUBLISHERS NOTICE. The News Publishing Company de sires it to be distinctly understood that all legal advertisements must be paid for in advance. We cannot afford to devote our space to such advertise ments and watt on the courts for the money. General Miles is becoming expert in aide stepping admiulstraton upper cuts. The first watermelons of the sea son reached Brunswick yesterday, and now Darktown is happy. Col. ISstili has asked the executive committee for a recount of the ballots in the recent primary, claiming ir regularities In several counties. Can't the city council be prevailed upon to make some disposition of that unsightly old market building on New castle street. Really it Is an eyesore. Tne new president of Hayti has not yet found time to write his executive inessago to the lelgsiature. Writing messages while dodging bullets Is con sidered a rather difficult undertaking. A New York girl was recently giv en sixty days for flirting with a married man over tlie telephone. It Isn’t stated what the man was given, but we opine that It was a sufficiency. The old Plaza hotel in New York that at the time of its erection was considered something stupendeous, is to he torn down to give place to a 20-story, $10,000,000 structure. The world "do” move! Ratbone ami Neeley go free in ac cordance with the Cuban amnesty law, but Kathbone saysi he wants v indie a lion by a court. He bad better take the advice of his patron Mark Hanna, and “keep on letting well enough alone.” A MATRIMONIAL FRAUD. When you read the matrimonial ad vertisements and learn that a lone some and handsome woman, who pos sesses a fortune In her own right, is yearning for a manly| man to care .for her and t;iie money, don’t you be lieve it. Don’t even waste a stamp investigating. Money doesn’.t grow on hushes, and beauty and sweet dispositions do not have to advertise for husbands!. A recent advertisement follows: "Tall, handsome, well-educated, wealthy, athletic girl, 21 years, speak ing several languages, wishes to cor respond with a matrimonially-inclined gentleman.’’ Sounds good, ' doesn’t it? Not a hint of selfishness. One can almost see Dianna opening the mail, her cheeks colored with blushes at the wholesale offerings of love. To is lady of several languages lived in Newburg. N. Y. Men in hun dreds asked for her hand. There were letters from all the big cities; ardent epistles, and cash, too. Even an ath letic girl could not be expected to walk to Kansas City or Cincinnati td meet the man of her choice. t And then the police arrested this Newburg Juno. They found a woman of 45, fat, and not 'napdsome—no, not In a thousand years could she be truthfully called beautiful. She ex postulated in broken German and English, and the Romance vanished from her by the time she reach ed a cell. Good enough for the fools who per sist In answering such advertise ments. Their mushy letters, with name a appended, should be published as an example of the sickening fol ly of mankind. Good wives are seldom found in the bargain column. WALTER HOWARD. The untimely death of Walter How ard, the well known newspaper man, which occurred In Asheville, N. 0., Wednesday la a distinct loss to journal ism in the very broadest sense. Mr. Howard was essentially a newspaper man, whether doing war stories from the capital of the Gem of the Alillcs or filling special assignment work, covering great diplomatic problems, at the Court of St. James', he was at all times the able, energetic and, above all, conscientious reflector of things as they wore and not as he would have them. ills was a genius, the inspiration of which came from beyond the stars. His talent was as versatile as it was refined and lie clayed upon literature much as a musician might his lute. Now hurling bitter invective and stinging rebuke, through a graceful metamorphose, all his own, he traced the softest tendrils, and portrayed (he most veritable of sonnets Ami had the Reaper spared him he would in time have reached the high est pinnacle in the profession he loved sfo devotedly and served so well, but, alaa, who can account for the in scrutablo decrees of relentless fate? A few years ago Howard was, in every scintilla and suggestion, a mag niflcent apeciment of manhood, gifted, pulsating in every fibre with a laud able jimbition with every promise of an abundance of success, but long liourfe of toll, exposure and other hard ships incident to newspaper work told its story and that dreaded disease —con sumption—laid hold upon.him, and, as Is usually, the case, won the victory. Though called away in the very~zcn itli of young manhood and at a time when his cherished ambiliona were within his grasp, Walter Howard has left a monument in American journal ism that the historian of the future cannot be unmindufu) of. He was the radiating genius of the Atlanta Daily News, and through this medium probably became more in touch' with the people of Georgia than in any of his previous professional ser vice ami that the paper was a gem of the art preservative and an ornament to southern journalism there can he no question. In common, with thousands of oth ers wno knew him, the writer is deep ly grieved over bis death, hut finds, balm in the reflection that the profes sion is nobler and hotter because he was a member of tt. A Loudon newspaper, in fulsome praise of the Duke of Marlborough, thinks he is destined for high things and will do something to restore the glories of the dnkedom. The editorial prediction may he filled, hut if it is Marlborough will have to hustle, as to far as he has shown that his destiny consists in spending money generous ly provided hy hlsj wife’s ancestors, the Vanderbilts. ' ■ ■***■ it id as yet difficult to see just how harmony, is going to prevail at tiie opening of the New Tilden club on the 19th with Messrs. Bryan, Cleveland and Hill all there, if it doea. how ever, the democratic party in-~ fi>el more hopeful than ever of Hiecess in the future, if these great leaders can harmonize their differences the democratic party will find itself in hot ter shape tnan it has been in a long time.
