Raleigh, June 11. —Miss Lula Ward, the pretty daughter of a well-to-do farmer of Catawba county, has had numerous suitors. She was in doubt as to which of two of them she should marry. She wanted to take the ad vice of some of her girl friends, and so went to the town of Hickory. The two went also and each of them procured a license, so as to be prepar ed the moment she made up. her mind. II required several hours for her to de cide. The two suitors were Professor Louis Holick and Will Winkler. The latter had long loved her, but was so bashful that he had never proposed. She finally decided in Winkler’s favor, sent him word and he hurried to the house where she was. Together they hastened to the resi dence of the Rev. Mr. Boone, who per formed the marriage ceremony. As soon as it. was ended Mr. and Mrs. Winkler left for their future home in Burke county. CAPTAIN KING PLEADS GUILTY. He Was Charged With Accepting a Bribe of $3,000. Mobile. June 11. —Captain Cyril W. King, former quartermaster in charge at Fort McPherson, who was convict ed lu the United States court in .Mo bile last year on the charge of accept ing a bribe of $3,000 in connection with work done at the fort, was ar raigned yesterday on two counts. He entered a plea of guilty as chan; ed In the first count and was sentenc ed to 13 months' imprisonment and to pay a fine of $3,000. The second count was nolle pressed. Baptists To Work In Mountains. Raleigh, June U. The Baptists o’ the North Carolina convention have but recently taken hold of tin- work -u the mountain region, but are now push ing it actively. They will buy several thousand acres of land in Yancey coun ty and erect on it a manual training school on a large scale. Rev. O. 1,. Stringfield, who did a great work In securing funds for the building and equipment of the Baptist Female uni versity at Raleigh, is the mainspring of this great training school project. Son Sees Father Suicide. Columbus, Ga., June 11 - In tlie pres, ence of his 11-year-old son, who was the only witness to the deed, Anderson Abercrombie, aged 38 ye!*rs, an opera tive at the Swift mill, suicided ill bis home on East Highlands by shoot ing himself through the head with a revolver. When friends rushed in they found him stretched on the floor dying He had been acting quccrly for scl eral days. He leaves a widow and three children. Atlantans Buy Alabama Coal Lands. Chattanooga, June 1’ —The Need more Coal and Coke company, with headquarters here, has sold to the Campbell Coal and Coke company ol Atlanta 2,500 acres of coal lands near Bridgeport, Jtla., for $125,000. The Neerlmore company retains 2,600 acres for development. A branch railroad of 10 miles is being built to the prop erty. BRITISH SHIPPING COMBINE. Project Is Subject of Much Discussion by London Newspapers. London, June 12.—-The newspapers here continue to discuss the British shipping combine as though the proj ect had assumed much more tangible shape that is yet admitted by those who are in a position to know the facts The Westminster Gazette to day intimates that the Cutiairl Lae will not join in forming the proposed Canadian British line and says the co lonial secretary, Mr. Chamberlain, ta vern subsidizing the latter project rather than the Cunard line-, which is more severely directed against the Morgan shipping combine. According to The Westminster Ga zette, the capital of the Canadian- British line would be 1210,000,00 b, of which 68,500,000 would be expended on six 25 knot passenger steamers and a dozen freight steamers. The pro moters, it is alleged, will receive a to. tal of 6 500,000 subsidy besides an im perial guarantee of interest of the cap ital amounting to .6300,000 yearly. MOUNTAIN FEUD BREAKS OUT. Man Is Shot About Trouble Dating l Back Two Years. Sewanee, Tcnii., June 12. —A moun tain feud broke out yesterday morn-1 ing. W. A. McCoy shot and scrioit,--! !y wounded It. I’. Armstead, a gar-1 dener. The trouble dates back two year i, when neighbors fell out about a line fence. l ast fall McCoy attempted to move tile fence and Mrs. Armstead put four rifle bullets through McCoy’s hat. Yesterday morning Armstead met McCoy near the Otey Memorial church and cursed him. McCoy went home and got his shotgun, and going to a place by which Armstead would pass laid in wait for him. When Armstead came up McCoy emptied both barrels in Armstead’s back. Armstead was immediately taken to the University infirmary, where he re ceived immediate attention. McCoy has not been arrested yet. I It is feared that there will he fur ther trouble when Armstead leaves the hospital. FARMS OF GEORGIA. They Number 224,691; Their Valua tion Is $183,370,120. Washington, June IJ.—The 224,691 farms enumerated in Georgia on June 1, 1900, according to the census re port on agriculture in the state, wove valued at $183,876,120. Of this value 25 per cent was in buildings. The value of farm implements and ma chinery was $9,804,010, and live stocks $35,200,507, making the total value ol farm property $228,374,637. The total value of farm products of the state for 1899 was $104,304,476, of which 17 per cent was in animal prod ucts aond S3 per cent in crops, includ ing forest products cut or produced o.i farms. , The total value of farm products exceeded that for 1889 by 25 per cent. The gross farm income for 1899 was $92,145,676 and the gross income upon investment 40 per cent. New Iron Bridge at High Shoals, Madison, Ga., June 10. —A commit tee of the county commissioners o( Morgan and Walton counties and the ordinary of Oconee county met at High Shoals recently and perfected plans to erect an iron bridge over the Appalacheo river at that point in place of the wooden structure that stands there now. The three counties inter sect at High Shoals. An advertise ment has been published for bids, and the new bridge will be built without delay. Ransom Money Disposed Of. Raleigh, June 10. In the United States district court here Judge Pur nell has sentenced J. T. Corbett, ex post master at Selma, to five years in tlie Atlanta penitentiary. Corbett stole registered letters and other letters containing valuables. Bloodhounds on Escapes’ Trail. Walla Walla, Wash.. June 11 .At the request of Governor (leer, of Ore gon, Superintendent John B. Catron, of Wellington state penitentiary, has sent trained bloodhounds to Salem to be used in tracking the prisoners who escaped from the Oregon prison yesterday, Will Stand by Trades Council. Denver, June 11. —The carpenters, painters and hod carriers, electric workers, stonecutters and stonemasons have voted to stand by tlie trades coun cil. The painters went a step farther and will resume work without hiring out to the contractors. Oldest Physician In U. S. Dead. New York. June 11.- -Otis Freeman, who is believed to have been the old est practicing physician in America, is dfitd at Freehold, N. J. Dr. Freeman was born In New Hampshire Dee. 30, 1809. He continued practicing to with in live days of his death. Convention of Dancing Teachers. New York, June 1 . —The Normal School Association of Dancing Mas ters of the United States and Canada lias opened its ninth annual conven tion in this city.
