The News Publishing Company de sires It to be distinctly understood that all legal advertisements must be paid fer in advance. We cannot afford to devote our space to such advertise ments and wait on the courts for the money.. — The News dessires the subscribers who are behind in their subscriptions to come up and pay at once as their papers will be discontinued unless a settlement is made. It is unfair and unjust to make The News send you a paper and then when the collector calls refuse to pay for it. The administration 'seems to have run up witn a genuine live wire in the pei'fljtjn of (ien. Wood. Joe 11111 Hall, ot Bibb, eannot, be blamed for the latest turn in the At lanta depot question. Quaysylvania is the way the Balti more Sun dulis the key stone state in these days of poll ileal hosslsm. The sweet girl graduate is now with us good and strong and ia the center figure of the stage just at this time. At last reports King Edward had ceased to wheeze, and It is said that John Jacob Astor is also breathing more regularly. While the Koosevelt administration thus far lias not boon noted for any great work it can be truly said that uc has kept official Washington in a rather “strenuous” condition. II is real naughty in the weather bureau to keep it constantly raining in London when King Edward and WJdtelaw Reivl are anxious to do a stunt in knickerbockers. The civil service rules as operated in Washington seem to be deeidely flexible, to say the least of it. That Is if the case of Misgi Taylor is a sample of tue way the law is admin istered. We do not know what Mr. McCrary wants with that-old market building, but if he will remove it from New castle afreet he will do the public an act of kindness for which they will ever remember him. foreign Captains have been unmer cifully gouged in the past for publish iug ship notices. The News is the only legal organ through which these notices can be published. Our rate is only $1.50. if you pay more you are being robbed. Miss l.aura Talbott Galt, of Louis ville, ivy., a school girl who refused ti sing Marching Through Georgia” wiimi ordered to do so by her teacher the other day, displayed more sense than tlie mutton head who wa s sup posed to he doing the teaching act. Senator Jones, of Arkansas, says he will not support any anti-Bryan candi date for the democratic nomination in I hut. The prospective nominee can find consolation in the thought the senator will out but little figure at that time if the recent senatorial elec tions in his own s/late may be taken for a sample of his political pull. LET THEM REST. A bill has been introduced lately. In the House, to have all the dead presidents removed to Arlington, thus creating a great national mausoleum for the United States. A prominent point In the argument for this pro posed act, is that ail countries but ours have charge of their dead rulers. All countries but ours have had rulers, who .were born so, and who died so. Our “rulers” spring from the common citizenry, are elevated to their positions by the people, because of their fitness or ability to act as a rilling power at a certain time. That ability being over—whether terminat ed by death, or, as more often the rasp, by the exegencies of the times and by the passing of certain events, they abain become private citizens. Our ex-presidents are not rulers. They are only common citizens. Unlike, they are, to the rulers, of other na tions, who are kings, until they die and whose lives are forever separated from that of ordinary people. When death comes to these they are buried in a stately royal Mausoleum, side by side with others of their kind. Our presidents rule for a few brief years, then give up their power to another man who is chosen to lake his, place. At the end of life they go to the common burial ground of a private citizen, to a tomb that is more iirlcsA grand and that is cured for by the family of the occupant. And this is at it should he. Each or our dead preuidents is bur ied in a beautiful tomb most of them in the neighborhood of toe homes they, occupied while living. Many of them are lying side by side with ther wives and children, and In places of their own selection; in spots they loved. A general movement of all those dead men would Incur a big expense, and would be of no advantage to any body. All honor tnat can be given them Is theirs. No place of burial could ever he more sacred than Mount Vernon and Hollywood and each cemetery that was near and dear to those who rest so peacefully within its confines. Considering the idea, from a senti mental 'standpoint, it seems to us that it is best to let the sleeping presidents lie where (tiey were tirst placed. Each is in a tomb, sacred in memory to him, and each grave is covered with beautiful monuments and is tended by loving hands). A foolish and useless task would it he to disturb ttie graves of all of these men. “After life’s fitful fever tney asleep well!” Let them rest! Tiie various employees of tin* riant System arc still ondcriuß where “they are at.” A few days ago Booker 'l'. Wash iugton, the Alabama negro educator, delivered the conuni n< ement address at the closing exercises of the Nebras ka Slate university, and the newspa pers of the north all called attention to the incident as showing the feeling of that 'sections towards (lie colored man and brother. The day before the colored state normal school at Eidora do. Kan., was broken up by a mob, tlie teachers and pupils being driven out of town and warned never to re turn. So far no extended comments on ttlie of tile latter cir cumstance as showing (he feelings, of northern people towards the colored race have been noticed in the press of that section. The incidents, joined tether, would seem to indicate that tlie north id fond of tlie negro only so long as lie stays in the south. One Fare Rales to SavUnnah.
