The News de sires the subscribers
who are behind in their subscriptions
to come up and pay at once as their
papers will be discontinued unless a
settlement is made. It is unfair and
unjust to make The News send you
a paper and then when the collector
calls refuse to pay for it.
The summer lassie and the sweet
girl graduate are now vicing with
each ot'ner for supremacy.
Judge Choate has been made an
1., 1., D. by' Oxford College. Now
won't that Jar John Jacob ABtor?
And soon the Georgia legislator
will lie wending Ills way to Atlanta
and the railroads will hold a session
lu the hall of the capital.
Judge T. A. Parker "wants al that
Is coming to him" and has announced
that he will be a candidate for the
uuexplred term of Judge Bennet.
It ia to he hoped that Mr. 11. S. Mc-
Crary will move that old market build
ing on Newcastle street to Way cross
or Jestip or some other old town.
That was a great joke Hal Lewis
played on the Georgia judiciary, and
from all indications a number of the
Judges have been spending some
sleepless nights.
Atlanta seems to he in decidedly
hard luck about that union depot,
and it's a pity, if we had depots' to
present we would give Atlanta a
buneh of them.
The new law linn of Kay, Bennet
and Conyers, which is to he formed
July firsft. will be one of the strongest
in this section ot the state. We wish
them great success.
Editor Perham, of the Waycross
Herald, is going to visit Washington
at an early date, and announces in ad
vance that ho will not call on Pres
ident Roosevelt. Well!
Secretary Root has a unique con
struction of the civil service law. as
was demonstrated in the ease of Misvs
Taylor. It's a travesty on the repub
lican form of government when free
speech is punished by the powers
that bo.
The mooting of the directors of the
Brunswick Ai ltirroiiigham railroad
company yesterday seems to indicate
that the management of the new line
propose to push the work of construc
tion as rapidly as possible. The cap
ital stock of the company has been
increased nearly fifty per cent, which
is a good sign that the company in
tends to do all that their charter calls
for. The directors left vesterday on
a tour of inspection of the line, and
on this trip will also take occasion to
go over the Offerman & Western,
which lias been recently purchased by
the B. & B, people.
JUDGE BENNET’S RETIREMENT.
With the retirement of Judge J. W.
Bennet from the bench on the Bruns
wick circuit the judiciary of the state
of Georgia will lose one of its! ablest
members, and it is a matter of regret
that the salary conditions of this state
make it necessary for such men as
Judge Bennet to retire from the judge
ship.
Few men are clothed with as much
power as the law. In its wisdom, bo-
Ktows upon Judges of our superior
courts; they pass upon our liberties,
and upon our lives and arc vested
with the sacred privilege of arbitrat
ing any and ail differences that may
exist between the citizenry of the
commonwealth. ,
It is, therefore, deplorable
that the partly salary' which
the state pays for this ser
vice is so inadequate that the step
taken by Judge Bennet Tuesday is in
perfect line with the course that other
able jurists in Georgia have been com
pelled to take. However, the unfortu
nate fact exists and we are not. vested
with the right to remedy the evil,
but along this line it may be well to
suggest that if the state of Georgia
will make the salaries of the members
of her judiciary commensurate with
the legal ability, dignity and tone of
the office, the bench of the state will
possess a higher degree of efficiency.
We regret exceedingly that it has
been necessary for Judge Bennet to
retiro. Asa jurist ho has been sig
nally successful, and in every hamlet
of the circuit he has established a
magnificent record for faithful ser
vice, aide construction of the law
and perfect impartiality as between
litigants, it matters not in wliieli of
the several courts of the circuit he
was presiding.
in this conneetlon, and while we dis
claim any inclination of throwing
hoquets, we feel that we must say
that few public men have ever laid
asido the robes of office and occasion
ed as much deep and sincere regret
as has been the case with Judge lieu
net. Tile people had come to know
hint; had a sublime faith in his integ
rity. anvl felt secure when matters in
whieli they were vitally Interested
were brought to him to be weighed in
the scale of justice.
Laying aside the ermine of the
court they knew Joe Bennet a-*| a
man and had an abiding faith, in the
realization of the fact that he pos
sessed in the very fullest, measure
those attributes that make the good
citizen and the loyal, law-abiding'
man.
He had ingratiated himself into
their affections as a jurist, and they
will join The News in expressing ah
solute sorrow at his voluntary retire
ment, For our part we wish Judge
Bonnet an abundance of success in
the practice of the profession of
which ho is such a sound exponent,
and whatever lines the future may
map out for him, the people of tin;
Brunswick circuit will ever ho mind
fnl of his magnificent service as their
judge.
"Mine host" Jacobi is making a
great success of Cumberland island
and visitors to this popular report are
loud in their praise of his excellent
service and uniform courtesy.
Senator Depew says that he is not
going to quit Ids public life to devote
liis time to the railroads. In this
neck of tue woods the two vocations
are pretty near synonymous.

tunity for a day at the seashore.
