The democrat* of the ’ country should get together before they con sume too much time selecting a pres ident. In 1904. "Treat the new graduate kindly. Hi n year he will discover that the world is difficult. to swing by the tail,” says, the Bavnnnah Press. Being told that Ills services were no longer needed iu the senate. Sen ator Hilly Mason has about decided to become a candidate for president. The (’nattanooga News puts no ere demo In the talk that there is no armed insurrection In the Philippines. It asks ho can the Filipinos keep up such a racket without firearms? Miss Taylor’s offense was overlook ed as long asl she confined her writ ings to commendations: of Admiral Sampson, but when she stepped upon the administration she stirred up a hornet's nest. Steps looking toward (lie annexa tion of Culia came earlier than ex pected. Senator Hildas has already introduced a resolution In (lie senate looking to this end. The annexation will come sooner or later. Quy having turned the trick in Pennsylvania again, seems Inclined to lie fftcottious. His most loyfii 1 organ, the Washington Post smilingly oh serves: "Now that the Pennsylvania republicans have come out good and strong .for an honest ballot and a fair count, we think the South Carolina democrats might afford lo denounce lynching.” THAT RESLOUTION. With reference to the proceedings of a meeting of the city council, which apears elsewhere in tills is sue of The News, we feel that the pub lic is entitled to some slight explana tion on the subject matter of the res olution, as well as that of the pubiica timi which appeared in our issue of yesterday, which It seems was re sponsible for the action of the coun cil. in the very beginning wc desire to disclaim any intention of reflecting in any way upon the official or personal integrity of City Treasurer Geo. H. Smith. When we think the conduct of a public official needs to be questioned we shall come out boldly and say so. and will not do It by ambiguous statements and unfair Inuendoes. The Item which appeared in our news columns Wednesday morning was secured In good faith, and when it was given space we thought wo were speaking “by the card,” as if were, and that we were giving tho public a piece of news! which they were entitled to. It appears, however, that an error was made either on our part on on the part of others, in either event, It seems that the publication was at variance with the facts in the case, in so much as council did not vote to employ an accountant to check the city! books, lmt to all intents and purposes that action was not neces sary, for the simple fact that the ac tion in Question was taken in January last by the council, and tho only fea ture discussed at Tuesday-* meeting waa whetner the American Audit Company shouid do tie- work or not, they having refused to take it for the amount fixed by eouncll, wanting instead payment at the rate of sp much per diem. It appears that the matter was left open; wo were informed that, such was not the case, and t'neso arc the facta in the matter. So far as the city treasurer h con cerned, we again say we ho.l no Idea of easting the slightest reflection on him, hut simply thought that we were giving the public an Interesting piece of news. Asa matter of fact, council adopted a. resolution In January last, npprrv printing $250. to he expended in em ploying an accountant to check all of the hooks of the city, and in as much an) this action was not rescinded at the executive session, we took it for granted that the original resolution stood as passed. That's all there la to It. FRUIT BY THE CARLOAD. The greeting which will bn extender! to the visiting Knights, families and friends of the Pythian hosts on reach ing San Francisco m-xt August will give t'netii some idea that, they have not made the trip in vain. Before reaching the city they will be met by a delegation of California Knights, who will bear greetings to them from the local brotherhood, and direct the visit.org to the ferry landing, where tlinyl will be taken by the reception committee to the grand nave of the ferry depot. Tn.it room is 550 feet In length and 75 feet lu height.. A con ception of the vastness of that ball may be Inferred from tbe fact that two carloads of fruit piled in one corner of it. can Scarcely be seen from the opposite end. That room will contain the information bureau, besides an abundance of California's choicest fruits, flowers and wines, to all of which the visitors will lie welcome. No attempt at display will be made here, only will be distributed. Ixjoatod In the same building are the splendid exhibits of the California State Board of Trade, containing sam ples from the different counties of ali the products of California. Here Is also the Instructive exhibit of tho California State Mining Bureau and of Hie world-famous Alaskan exhibit, containing samples of every conceiv able article produced or used by the dwellers of Alaska. No wonder crowds are already planning to take advantage of the low railroad rates and go to Califor nia during August. It is the Chance of a lifetime to sec the great west and the marvels of this Paeiflc coatr Notice to Masters. The News will publish ship notices at $1.50. It is the only legal medium through which these notices can be publisned. The F. J. Byrd Process is tho latest and most reliable as well as a purely scientific method of clean ing clothes.
