The consumption of spirituous
liquors for drink in the United
States is gradually diminishing, when
considered in comparison with the in
crease in population. The official re
ports sjiow that the average produc

amount to 90,000,000 gallons a year,
and from this not less than ten per

THE CITY MAN’S VACATION.
Even the recreation business has
become specialized, and the tired-out
man is glad to take a cursory look at
the lists) of attractions offered by re
sorts uml then let selection hinge on
railroad facilities.
Resorts by the thousands are al
ready tilling with tired-out men and
women and sickly children, who
cheerfully pay outrageous prices for
the privilege of sweltering and suffer:
ing discomforts that they would not
thick of tolerating at home.
The country gentleman may find his
best recreation in the city, the moun
taineer may find In tue valleys, and
the man of the coast and he of the
interior may change places; but the
city man needs the quiet of the coun
try. \
The city man If- sick and tired of
the noise, the confusion, the dirt, the
smoke, the unending bustle and rush
and roar and rattle.
His racked nerve* cry for quiet,* for
peace, for open space.. fo v air that is
pure and sunshine that is clean and'
clear.
So l)i soul urges him to the good,
green country; to the fields with their
billowy crests of great, white seas and
oTJorus carpets of clover bloom; to
the woods with their green canopy
of lacing bougns, with their deeps
of fragrant gloom, with their great,
downy couches where he may lie next
to dear Mother Nature's heart, as
when a child, anvl hear once more her
sweetest whisperings of universal
harmony and love; to the streams that,
laugh and smile and kiss him welcome.
Here may he be waked, fresh and
bright, by the Bob White's whistle on
the dewy dawn, to dreamthrough
days that are long-spun threads oi
gold, linked by starry nignts of sil
ver.
Here may bis weary heart find joy
complete in miracles of color, in
spicy, subtle odors, in sounds firm,
deep, tumultuous.
Here may he drink, through every
quickened sense and with grateful
reverence, the cup that Nature fills
for him —a happy draft unmixed with
pain.
If you are wearying and sickening
with overwork and overworry the
chances are the trouble is not in the
work, but In you. Stop it. before it.
stops you.
Take a month off, or two weeks,
or one, or a day whatever you can
get, take and go.
Go to the fields and streams and
woods, where liio la a smile and a
song. If you nevttr knew a quiet nook
whose hallowed memories haunt you
these hot days, then may tue Lord
help ypu! And he will, if ypu 'give
him a chance!
Go and know what peace and rest
and fresh food mean.
Go and get anew grip on yourself
and take your bearings. Go and get
new health, now hope, new seif re
spect and new reanlva.
