MANY HURT IN WRECK PASSENGERS ESCAPED INJURY Eastbound Train, Running at High Speed, Dashes Into Another Which Had Taken a Siding With Fearful Results—Misplaced Switch Cause. Staples, Miun., June 21.---A head-en i collision occurred at Lower Lakeside, 2 miles west of here, on the Northern Pacific at 1:45 o’clock this morning between No. 7, passenger, westbound, and No. 8, passenger, eastbound, in which six persons were killed. Engineer Scott., of No. 7, took the siding expecting No. 8, which had the right of way to pass. The latter, be lieving everything clear, came along at a high rate of speed. The switch, however, had in some way. not yet ex plained, been turned and No. 8 dashed into the waiting train. All the passengers escaped injury except Harry Ziegler, of Hammond, ind., in the smoker of No. 8, which was telescoped. He received serious Internal injuries and was taken to the hospital at Brainerd. The dead: * Conductor Noble, of No. 8. George Kamussen. fireman No. 8. Walter Scott, engineer No. 7. Unknown tramp on No. 8. Ernest Schultz, engineer No. 8. Moeller, baggageman No. 8. Besides these W. H. Montgomery, fireman of No. 7, and Express Messen gers Gibson and Piedrlck were badly injured. The wreck caught fire and the passengers formed a bucket, brigade and kept the flames under control for a time, but at 4:35 the work was given tip and the fire burn ed four coaches and three or four mail, express and baggage cars. Engineer Scott’s body has not yet been recover, ed and it is thought that two or three mail clerks and baggagemen are not yet accounted for, GIRL’S CORPSE IN SLEEPER. Grewsome Find Made by Trainmen In Michigan. Esoanaba, Mich., June 21. — At an early hour the trainmenr. on the train which left here at 9 o’clock last, night liud a grewsome find. The dead body of Bessie Matthewson, of the Soo, was placed in the berth of a sleeping ear before the ear left here last nigiit. The girl was from Sault Bte Marie and was on her way to Chicago to be treated for consumption. A traveling man who knew her was taking her from the Soo line to the Northwestern depot here on a street ear. The girl grew worse and as lie was carrying her to tin* coach she died in Ids arms. Not having time to attend to the ar rangements, the man simply carried her Into the train, put tier in a berth and left her. GIRL VICTIM OF FLAMES. Four Others Who Went to Her Assist, ance Severely Burned. Pittsburg, June 21.- Annie Keno, aged 10 years, was fatally burned at Braddoek today and four others who went to her assistance were severely burned. Their names: Jennie Ellis. Mrs. Annie Baker, Mrs. Mary Malloy. Justice John O. Rich, ards. The little girl was playing near a rubbish fire in the rear of the Rob inson hotel when her clothing caught tire. Her screams brought help and the four people who rushed to her assist anee were all seriously burned. They will recover. The girl was burned so badly that her death is only a question of a few hours. Attempt at Highway Robbery. Evergreen. Ala.. June 21. A hold at tempt at highway robbery occurred near Evergreen a few days ago, infer, motion of which has just been receiv ed. the facts being as follows: Wil liam Coleman had been in Evergreen attending to some business and left for his home near Tern. When about 5 miles from town ho was confront ed by three men, who he thinks, are negroes. He was told to throw up his hands, but instead of doing so he drew his revolver and began firing on the desperadoes. They gave up their job of robbing him and took to the woods. One of the negroes foil, supposedly struck by a hall, hut be fore Mr. Coleman could get to him he was up and gone with the other two. Third Trial for Miss Morrison. Eldorado, Kan., June 21. -A jury to try Jessie Morrison for a third time for the murder in June. 1900. of Mrs. Ollie Castle was completed today and the taking of testimony was begun. Miss Morrison killed Mrs. Castle by slashing her throat with a razor. The first jury disagreed and the second found her guilty and assessed her pun ishment at 10 years' imprisonment. This verdict was reversed on a tech nicality. Hill Is a Candidate. Birmingham. Ala.. June 21. —Profes- sor 1. W. Hill, superintendent of the Gadsden city schools, has announced his candidacy for state superintendent of education. When asked in refer ence to the matter he said that he had decided to make the race, having been solicited to run by a number of teach •r*. SILK DYERS ON STRIKE IT WILL PROBABLY BE SETTLED. The New York Italian Chamber of Commerce Will Endeavor to Ar range the Differences and a Settle ment is Looked For. New York, June 21. —The Italian chamber of commerce of this city has decided to try to arbitrate the differ ences between the striking sHk dyers of Paterson and their employers. At a secret meeting of that organization, many of the members being silk im porters whose business is affected, a committee of four was appointed to visit Paterson today and confer with the city officials, the strikers and the mill owners, and to offer to act as ar bitrators or in any other acceptable way lend the help of the Italian busi ness men toward the settlement of the strike. Secretary Seonfietti, who went to Paterson to arrange for the confer ences, saw Mayo Ilinchciiffe and ex plained the purpose of his visit. Tire mayor received him cordially and agreed to meet the committee. Quiet In Wyoming Valley. Wilkesbarre, Pa.. June 21.—Extreme quietness continues to prevail through out the Wyoming region. Strike head quarters presented a deserted appear ance this forenoon and the leaden, with the exception of President Mitch ell, were scattered through the coal belt. There was no change noticeable in the working forces of the coal com panies. very few if any men being brought out In this valley today. PROPOSED NEW LINE. Asheville and Rutherfordton Railroad to Be Built. Asheville, N. 0., June 21.—The Asheville and Rutherfordton railway will be built and active work on the proposed line will begin at once. The road will be built by George T. Canis, of New York. The contract was sign ed today. Work on the proposed line Will begin at the RuthejTord end. The contract gives Mr. Canis about four years' time in which to com plete the road. The line, however, will be completed in perhaps just half this time. The exact location of the line lias as yet not been determined. The road will run via Fail-view and will enter Asheville from the southern part of the city. The length of the road from Asheville to Rutherfordton is 40 miles. From Asheville the road will extend to Tennessee. It. is not known who Mr. Canis’ back ers are in the movement, but it is gen erally believed that it is the Seaboard. Boy Treated to Water Cure Dies. Guthrie, O. TANARUS„ June 21. The an tliorities of Pottawattomie county are investigating the death of Arthur E Pi lore, aged 14. near Shawnee, alleged to have resulted from attempts of sev. oral companions to treat him with the "water cure.” He was submerged in the Canadian river until his lungs and stomach were filled with water, result lng a few days later in Ills death, “Tombs Angel" Dead. New York. June 21 Mrs. Ernestin Shaffer, known as the “Tombs Angel" previous to entry into rescue work of Mrs. Foster, who lost her life in ’the Park Avenue hotel lire, is dead. She had been in poor health for several years and was compelled to give up her work in the city prison on that account. Bridges Across the Ashley. Washington.
