PROF. HILLS REPORT.
Professor Robert T Hill, United States
government geologist and head ot tliu
expedition sent by the National Gco
grauhieal Society, has Just come in
from a daring and prolonged investi
gation ot the volcanic activity in Mar
tinique. Professor Hill chartered a
steamer and carefully examined the
coast as far north aa Port Lie Macouba,
at the extreme end of the island, mail
ing frequent landings. After landing
at Le Proehuor, & miles north of St.
Pierre, he walked through an area of
active volcaulsm to the latter place
and made a minute examination of the
various phenomena disclosed.
Professor Hill is the first and only
man who has set foot in the area of
craters, fissures and fumaroles, and
because of his high position as a scion,
tlst his story ia valuable. In addition
to his work of investigation the pro
fessor rescued in his steamer many
poor people 'of Le Preelieur who had
ventured back after deserting their
homes and found themselves in awful
danger. He reports as follows:
"Tho none of the catastrophe in Mar
tinique forms nn elongated oval, con
taining on land about 8 square miles
of destruction. This oval is partly
over the sea. The land part Is bound
ed by lines running from Le Preohuer
to tho peak of Mont Pelee, thence
curving around to Carbet. There were
three well marked zones: First, a cen
ter of annihilation, in which life, vege
table and animal, was utterly destroy
ed.
“The greater northern part of St.
Pierre was In this zone. Second, a
xone of singeing, blistering flame,
which also was fatal to all life, kill
ing all men and animals, burning the
leaves on the trees and scorching hut
not utterly destroying the trees them
selves. Third, a large outer, non-de
structive zone of ashes, wherein some
vegetation was Injured. The focus of
annihilation was the new crater mid
way between the sea and the peak of
Mout Pelee. where now exists anew
area of active voieanism with hun
dreds of fumaroles or miniature vol
canoes. The new crater is now vomi..
lug..black, hot mud, which is falling
Into the sea. ltoth craters, the old
and the new, are active. Mushroom
shaped steam explosions constantly
ascend from the old crater. while
heavy, ash laden clouds float horizon
tally from the new crater. The old
ejects steam, smoke, mud. pumice and
lapllli, hut no molten lava.
“The salient topography of the re
gion Is unaltered. The destruction of St
Pierre was due to the new crater. The
explosion had great superficial force,
acting In radial durations, as is evi
deni ed by the dismounting and carry
ing for yards the guns in the battery
on the hill south of St. Pierre, and
the colonial statue of the Virgin in the
same locality, and also by the condi
tion of the rained houses in St. Pierre.
"According to the testimony of soma
persons there was an accompanying
flame. Others think the incandescent
cinders and the force of their ejection
were sufficient to cause the destruc
tion. This must be investigated. lam
now following the nature of this hill."
ThU Is the first positive scientific
■tatemeut based on observed facts.
Professor Hit' boa now started or
horseback for the volcano. He will
study the whole affected area and will
try to get to both craters. He will
surely visit Morne Rouge and the slope
of Mont Pelee. The undertaking Is
very hazardous, as eruptions may oc
cur at any moment, as one did May 20.
Professor Hill knows the risk he takes,
but says the only way to discover ex
actly wliat has happened Is to go to
the crater Itself, or as near It as pos
sible. He will be gone two days.
Fort de France is nearly deserted. A
now source of ffight is fear that a
tidal wave may come. A wave eight
feet high would certainly destroy Fort
de France and possibly cause enor
mous loss of life.
The weather is lowering and rainy.
The south winds carry the smoke and
ashes from the volcano away from
Fort de France.
A FAMOUS! PAINTING.
Some of the nnest Japanese paint
ings In Washington are In the legation
building of that nation, the Japanese
embassador being a collector and con
noisseur of the art of his native laud.
The Japanese style of painting is alto
gether unlike that of Europe and
America, and the reason Japanese
painters are able to produce color ef
fects that are the despair of Euro
pean and American artists is owing to
the pigments they use, a large number
of which are secret arid unknown out
side of Japan.
In Japan there is a very famous
painting which no amount of money
could buy and which is the master
piece of a famous artist who lived
several centuries ago. Viewing the
painting in the daytime, one Is disap
pointed. It shows nothing more than
u very commonplace landscape, unre
lieved by mountains or hills. As soon,
however, as night falls one begins to
realize the peculiar merit of the pic
ture, for upon the canvas there ap
pears a luminous water buffalo (cari
bou) browsing upon the grass at It*
feet.
The artist who painted this picture
discovered a certain phosphorescent
paint, which lie obtained from the bod
ies of certain moilusks, or fish, and
with which he painted the buffalo that.
Invisible In daylight, is luminously
brilliant in the dark. The secret
making tills paint died with the artist.
The picture, which hangs in a Bud
dhist temple, lias proved a fertile source
of superstition, the priests claiming that
tlie buffalo hides away in the shade
behind some trees In the picture dur
ing the heat of the day, coming out at
night to graze.—Washington Post.
