We cannot afford to devote our space to such advertise ments and wait on the courts for the money. i The New*, desires the subscribers who are behind in their subscriptions to come up and pay at once as their papers will be discontinued unless a settlement is made. It is unfair and unjust to make The News send you a paper and then when the collector calls refuse to pay for it. TO COLONIZE MINDANAO me pmn to colonize Mindanao, which the cable lately reported, la one that ought to retip rich harvest* f,.r Ameri can capital, any a the Manila Times. Mindanao, while perhaps not more richly endowed by nature than the other latunds of the archipelago, him for various reasons remained almost virgin of the explorer's foot anil Is even now awaiting colonization and develop ment. The habits of the Moros are con ducive neither to settlement and ex ploitation by Latin conquerors and their Malay subjects nor to a light state of development under tliclr own beulgn sway. Therefore the second largest Island In the group lies today waiting for the Americans to-come and take the wenlth from Us bosom with out fear of rival. Mindanao Is celebrated for Its forests of gum, guttu percha ami rubber trees, but little use has ever been made of them us yet. Copra Is a good, steady commodity In any of the southern is lands. A small cluster of coeoamit trees Is sutllclent to keep a native family In the lap of luxury. The tree has to be planted and guarded against the brows lug of cattle for the tirst four or live years of Its life. After that nature and the Chinese trader will do the rest. At the age of eight or ten years the tree begins to bear. It ean be relied on to produce on nu average a hundred nuts u year, tn good seasons It will beat four crops a year, from forty to sixty or eighty nuts a crop. The nuts sell on the trees nt a peso a hundred. This Is eleur profit, for no cultivation Is need ed. Two hundred trees ean be grown to the acre, almost assuring an annual Income of SIOO gold. The life of a tree la In the neighborhood of a century. Thus It can be seeu that the position of a proprietor of a large and flourishing grove of cocoanut trees Is almost a sin ecure. The wear and tear on the human aystem of sitting In the shade and watching the copra crop mature Is so | ■mall us to lie almost lucousldcrable. THE GREENE ...D GAYNOR CASE la was only a few short weeks ago tnat the people of Georgia were stur tltd with the news that! Captain Green and Colonel Oaynor had iv raped the clutches of the federal courts at Savannah. and that coin t- was placed in the em barrassing position of announcing ready for the most notorious ease that has come before it In years, only to find that no defendants were before them to try. Soon we learned that this famous couple had forfrtttd a bond that in il self amounted to a fortune, and were aafsly across the Canadian line, en joying life in a luxuriant hotel, scoff tng at the power of the United States, and laughing at the idea or an efl. being made to bring them uarK , 0 trial. But "lie who laughs last laughs longest." and now we find the tables conaiderablyt urne.k these two distin gueshed gentlemen* have been forced to give uup their luxurious qua iters and are now put to it to Invent some new way of escaping the hands of jus tic* HER REAL NAME. The fact is but little known that Hi* family name of Florence Nightingale was not originally Nightingale, but Shore. Her father was a rich Sheffield banker of the name of Shore and con nected with an old family which had been In possession of land In the coun ties of Derby and York since the fif teenth century. Mr. Shore assumed the name of Nightingale long after the birth of ids children and because lie in herited the fortune and estates of his mother’s uncle. There were hut two children in the family, both girls. The eldest was named Parthenosse, be cause she was born in Athens, and this name was supposed to indicate her fa ther's profound admiration for the Par thenon. The younger. Florence, wag also named after the city of her birth. The early Biblical references to pieces of silver do not in the original convey the idea of coins, but of weights, shekels. The Mosaic "oblation to God” was a half shekel, and the sheat-i is ex plained by Josephus as equal to four Athenian drachma* of a value of about r,r,Uj cents In American money. The first Jewish coinage under authority was, it is believed, at ruck, by Simon the Maccubee, about the year 140 It. It consisted of shekels and half shekels. This coinage had its value signified upon It, "Shekel Isiael.” In Samaritan characters. "Itr. De Witt Talmage during his visit to England in 1870." says the Lon don Chronicle, "had been e* gaged to preach In a eintr a die large towns of Englat rr. mg at the building he fot. and it besieged by a throng of from 13.000 to UO.OOO people. Naturally, he expected the place would he crowded Inside.
