UNLUCKY NAME FOR KINGS.
The present king of England is the
seventh bearer of a name which has
proved somewhat unfortunate to the
six Edwards who preceded him.
Little luck has come to any of the
royal Edwards, and superstituios per
sons may believe that any ;;pod for
tune aecrulng'fo Edward VII. will be
iiue to the lucky number which fol
lows his name.
Edward I. spent most of his days
rolling up trouble for himself and in
curring general hatred by his bitter
warfare against Scotland.
Ed ward Ji. profligate and weakling,
was murdered in prison.
Edward 11T. lived to see his only son
--the Black Prince, whom he idolized
-die; and himself died knowing he
was to be succeeded by a. vacillating
delicate grandson, who might upset
(lie grand dynasty the Black Prince
and his father hail built up.
Edward IV., after usurping Eng
land's throne and causing the death of
Henry IV., lived but a short time in a
court rent with dissontions; then,
while still young, died of disease.
Edward V. was murdered in the
Tower.of London by order of his fa
ther’s brother, the Duke of Gloucester,
alter Richard 111.
Edward VI. and, :d while still a mere
boy.
Edard VII. lias been compelled to
wait until bo was over lit) before as
cending the throne.
One other name only among Eng
land's king’s has proved so disastrous
- the name of Richard.
All three of England's King Rich,
aids died violent deaths; the first
and third in battle, and the second by
assassination.
