It was a great Fourth of July in Brunswick. A couple in Ohio have just eelebrat <;d t'ne 09th anniversary of tueir mar llage. Tiie Filijimw celebrated the Fourth. Getting American 'habits at an early stage l of Iho ga me. The Pennsylvania state building at the Charleston exposition cost $11,325 and was sold for $135. State elections will be held in Ala bama on August Ith, in Arkansas on September 1, ami in Virginia on Sep tember 2. The Mormons claim that their 3,000 missionaries made 20,000 converts last, year. They evidently visited the Snl tan of Suiu. The Kansas and Nebraska wheat erop is something phenomenal. Farm era are offering $2.50 per day for bar vesters and yet the supply falls short of the demand. To invite Mn Bryan a.-s a silent guest at a political love feast is almost as absurd as it is cruel. 'A tongueless Bryan.” says the Baltimore American "Is about as interesting and wlerd as a breakcrless surf." A drummer collected a debt recently in New York by compelling the head of the firm to draw and sign a check jfor $2,500 at the point of a pistol, lie explained when arrested, that he had no money to spend in lawyers' fees. BRING THEM SOUTH. "The northwest." says an eastern contemporary, “never had such an in flux of homosty kers and settlers as this year, and they have money for farms and homes and implements. This is Evident from the fact that some are paying S4O per aero for land w'liich could not have liiieii sold for a quarter of that amount two or three years ago. The extent of this immi gration movement is almost ineredita hie. It is reported from Sti Haul that in sixty days ending \pril 12 more than 160.000 lionhvo'ekers passed through that city hound for the north west, and that 25,000 ears of freight belonging to them were also trans ported.” Why is it that so few of these dome seekers come south, where the lands are cheaper and better, where the cli mate is more congenial and where it is much easier to live and become inde pendent from the soil? asks the Lou isville Courier-Journal. Is it not time that we discontinue boasting of the superiority of our sounern selves long enough to go to work and show outsiders the superi ority of our southern country ? A JUST AND WISE POLICY. The United States Steel Corporation has recognized the extraordinary good. times that have been prevailing in the iron and steel industry by a voluntary advance of 10 per cent, in the wages of about one hundred thousand men in its employ. This sort of conduct ought to become the rule, rather than the exception, in the great industrial enterprises of our times. In point of ✓ fact, it is the policy that has tyeen acted upon in a number of instances by those* corporations which are most distinguished for farsightedness, and good management generally. Trie in jury done fiy Strikes ts so great, both to the capitalists and he laborers, that a. policy which has powerful tendency to prevent strikes constitutes the very best form of insurance against one of the most "formidable dangers of indus trial enterprise*. Of course, from the point of 'view of humanity and equity, this argument ought to be unneces sary; for, just as a reduction of wages is decided on, as a matter of necessity, very soffit after a curtailment of Inis' iness cift's down profits below the nor mai. so an advance of wages ought to be given cheerfully and promptly in the opposite condition of affairs, in stead of it being made to ait on the compulsion of strike, or the threat of one. Taking an even larger view, it is quite plain that few things can do more to allay popular dissatisfaction with the existing order of things than jusi such recognition of the duty of capital toward labor as is displayed in a volun tary increase in wages. Miss Annie I’rlngie, of Tliomasvillc, ailed yesterday to (Visit tne Miss* Lilia and Ella Blanton on St. Simon. A CIVIC LEAGUE. We noticed witn pleasure some months ago, a movement begun among the school children to form a society known as the Junior Civic League, its object being to beautify me school grounds and to make an effort toward interesting house owners in the mat ter of beautifying their own grounds. A walk through the| residence portions of the city reveals to the observer that the movement has seemed to he very effective!, in some localities at and rate. A great many homes that before were nnormuueuted with na ture's choicest and most easily obtain ed gifts, flowers, are now perfect bowers of vines, palms and blossoming plants. Ilow refreshing to the tired eye of the pedestrian, walking through the neat and sand of some of our streets to see these vases of coll, grvn lawns with their borders of violets, cannas, roses, etc. To those whose in dividual efforts halve accomplished so much towards making our little city a garden spot, all praise is due. May their pathways in life be strewn with roses and their homes hereafter be flower-gemmed. But how much in proportion might he accomplished, if all ware to work in unison towards the beautifying of not only their own grounds, but the sidewalks, streets and vacant lots in their various neigh borhoods? Just think of the vast amount of good work done by the ladies of the Cemetery! Society since its organixa lion eighteen months ago, and with every one interested, as they must be, in this movement, how much more might be accomplished. lk-t some enterprising and ambi tious woman of artistic temperament, and there are many such here, organ Ize a society for the improvement oi the city from an artistic standpoint. “In union is strength " So much more can be accomplished through organiza tion than by individual effort. But in the meantime, let every house owner see to it that his yard is clean and neat, and if possible green and fool, that the gates are well hung and that the sidewalks in his vicinity are well swept and well kept. The results will be surprising. Then let all who can, plant flowers; evixn the plain old marigolds and zenias, as of our grandmothers gardens will an swer. if nothing better offers, and those who pass in their daily journeys to and fro, and visitors jto our city will look with grateful eyes on the bright spots scattered along their pathways and mentally bless the hand that unconsciously ministers to their aesthetic tastes. Saved From an Awful Pat*. “Everybody said I had consump tion," writes' Mrs. A. M.
