The News desires the subscribers

There is a political contest on in
South Carolina and it is needless to
say tiiat it. is not.
Dupont, Onerry's paper says: “The
politicians by resolutions control the

The members of council in a Maine

A Boston dispatch announces that
Agninaido is coming to the United 1

lectures on the conditions in tne i’hil

the independence of his countrymen.
The opinion Is generally expressed
that the solicitor of the state depart
ment was guilty of an unpardonable
broaich of propriety in applying the
language he did in a written state
ment with reference to a United
States senator. For a much less of
fense to propriety General Nelson A
Miles was 'severely relinked by the
president, and a woman. Miss Rebecca

position in the departmental service

EGYPTIAN COTTON.
According to an Interview with Mr.
0. S. Austin, of San Antonio, Texas,
Egyptian cotton may work a revolu
tion in the cotton industry in the
south. Mr. Austin says that Egyptian
cotton is being introduced into Texas
with favorable results “It is much
more desirable,” says he, “than the
cotton raised in the United States
now, and is even better than the sea
inland cotton. The Egyptian cotton
lias much longer filler than other col
tons and its seed can he removed so
easily that it Is not necessary to cut
the cotton in ginning it. A series of
saws which work between rods is
used in ginning ordinary cotton an.l
considerable poor Is required to tear
it loose from its seeds. The Egyptian
cotton can be separated from Its seed
by a series of rollers, which do not
cut the cotton and destroy the length
of its filler. The department of agri
culture Yias distributed the new cotton
throughout the south an.l it. will soon
ho known whether the Egyptian pro
duct will flourish in the districts do
.voted to the raising of cotton.
While Egyptian cotton may even
tually l>c grown on a large scale in
the south, it is quite probable that it
will he a number of years before it
supplants, if it ever does, the cotton
that is at present SO successfully
grown in tin- south.
