It la a pity Oglethorpe company cannot go to San Francisco. The sheriffs who are after Tra cey are thinking of calling out two or three now regiments. Prince Henry has composed a march which in being published. H!a American trip evidently went to nis head. J. TMerpotjt Morgan must be nearly ready to Pont the stock of his Europe an Corporation of Syndicated Kings, says the Chicago Nows. Evanston, Chicago’s rich suburb. Is going to license cats. II is calculat ed that a revenue of $2,000 annually will be derived from this source. Ollier cities in our immediate vi clnlty are complaining of sunstrokes, but they are a rurally in Brunswick, and wlitle of course we lmve some warm weather, the nights are alwny delightfully cool. Ronntor Kittridge, of Sout'n I iUo ta prides himself on never saving anything except "Yes" nml "No" to newspaper men. The day may come when lie will want to say more and they may not In Inclined to listen, The Augusta Chronicle does not agree wit’n Congressman Griggs that the issues of the next presidential campaign ought to lie routined to trusts. It would Include imperialism and (lie reciprocity question with Cu ba. There will likely he more than one issue. Brunswick needs more small fac tories. and capital seeking such In vestment could not find a holler place to locate. Wo have the advantage of the best deep-water port on too South Atlantic, witn good freight rates, and tills city is (tie terminus of two great lines of railways. Miss Ethel Roosevelt slipped from the back of her corse; Master Ar chibald got off bis horse and tighten ed the saddle girth; Master Kerniit stubbed liis too and fell down; Ted dy, Jr., stuck a splinter in his fin ger while climbing a fence. Such seems to be the character of the news that is destined to come from Oyster Bay during the summer vacation of tae president. • Am THE SHIRTWAIST MAN. Men are so afraid of losing their reputation [or being above the vaga ries of the fashion, mat they will not adopt a sensible suggestion In the way of clotriiug, if it is a radical de parture from the custom of years. Time was when if a man appeared before a lady without a heavy hot coat on his back, even in the middle of August, he was guilty of a gross breach of good taste. The fashion of going without one’s coat which gavo rise to the shirtwaist, so called nas been bitterly fought, even by the men who suffered through the sum mer, in the hot wool garments of their grandfathers' time. But common sense and comfort is against custom this time, and slowly the “shirt waist” is becoming less and less notlcable on men, because more and more fre quently worn. The shirtwaist girl is an institution long fought against, but afterwards accepted and al present exit ailed and adored. She goes up the streets witli impunity and strips of embroidery or lace in her shirtwaist that gladden the eye masculine by what they so indifferently coneeal. She Is no long er an Innovation, but a charming cus tom, the more tranceful the more ac customed we become lo lu r. She is here to stay, and no well governed l community can do without, her. The time will come when the shirt-' waist man who is following after the girl will he just as popular. ’Tis true the shirtwaist man is not a thing of beauty and Is not likely to ho a, joy forever. Neither front nor rear elevation meet the requirements of up-to-date architecture. Is hi giv en to adipose development? fie np pears piggy, puffy-, poddy and Bolog na--sausagey In a shirtwaist is lie slender? He suggests a scarecrow or a hoehandle swathed In an inverted mcalsack. But 111 or well looking the shirtwaist, man is making conquests wild converts and in time he will constitute all the male population witli the exception of a few eccen trics. The shirtwaist Is the most, settsl Ido garment yet devised for hot weather. It Is light and cool an I cheap, it Is not In the way and does not cling and flap like porspiration soaked coat-sleeves. The condensed steam and heat that is prisoned under a vest escapes and hides not to tor ture and consume. Tito Frenchman’s blouse, which Victor Hugo did not scorn to wear when at work lie con- sidered himself an artisan has been minimized liy the American "jumper” and both are a vast Improvement on the ancient mode of dress; but the shirtaist is an improvement on both. Americans will bo sorry that Min isler Wu Ting-Fang Is to return as the minister of his country at Wash ington. He lias become a popular fa vorite, and during his incumbency of toe Chinese ministry had added much to the gaily, of the nation its well as its information. Wo know a great deal more about the Chinest than when Mr. Wu came to Washington some five years ago, anil wo have greater res pet for their civilization. Ho Itas shown ns that even the “heathen” may lie a man of deep learning, broad mind and wide char ity. Mr. Wu's innumerable American friends will watch Ills career in his own country with interest, and it would gratify but not surprise them to sec him eventually the prime min ister of his sovereign. , Notice.
