FRIDAY MORNING iTOTjiTtar--fi —ti~ —— A trunk tournament, in which pygmy prices play an important part— and we add with emphasis, that he who hesitates loses a good trunk It doesn t matter whether you need a trunk just now come and see th*m any way. All of these trunks are heavy canvas covered, strong hard wood slats on all—some sole leather bound, some iron hound, some have two leather straps, heavy brass locks, some linen, some two trays with hat box compartment, two bottoms, one of which is sheet iron, and not one in the lot but will defy the fiercest baggage smasher that ever flung, kicked or jumped on an unoffending trunk. Some of these trunks are great, handsome, swell. | C. MeGARVEY, 316 Newcastle Street. A party of noblemen were nnniring themselves shooting near Dijon, France'. After a shot by the Marquis of Tours, aimed at something seen in distinctly in a thicket, a human cry was heard. The party rushed to the point whence it proceeded and found a young girl of sixteen lying on the ground bleeding from a bullet wound in her side. From the opposite direc tion a man came hurrying, and when he saw what had happened he took the girl up in his arms and. shaking his fist at the huntsmen, cursed them for what laid been done. "Is it. thus that you overrun our peaceful fields, you nobles who never toil, but feed on what we common peo ple produce? Amf, not content with wasting the fruits of our toil, you ruthlessly shoot our children without taking the trouble to discover that they are uot birds. Wait, messieurs! The day will come when we will crush you under our heels!” "It was an accident,” replied the marquis. "Here; take this,” throwing him a golden louis. “Were it not for your threats 1 would make it ten times ns much. Come, messieurs. Let us go on.” The party proceeded on their way. but laid not gone a dozen yards before the coin was sent spiiming past the ear of the marquis. One gentleman, a young fellow of twenty, remained be hind. Kneeling beside the girl, lie stanched the blood with his cambric handkerchief, then said to her father: "Let us carry her to her home. ] am a student in the Paris School of Medi cine. I will see what I can do for her.” Henri I)twine did not leave the homo of Antoine Gamier until the da ugh ter, Lizette, was out of danger. In deed, he alone saved her life. The 1 country doctors of that day knew noth lug of surgery and could not have cur ried safely through such a dangerous case. Three weeks had elapsed when the young doctor said to Gamier: "The crisis has passed. Any physi cian can now attend to the dressing of the wound.” "Doctor,” replied the father, “why have you taken this trouble? You are a noble.” "Yes, but I am a man.” "You have given me the life of my daughter. Some day I may repay you.” "I do not need money, and f.trust that 1 may never need your assist ance,” replied the young surgeon. Eighteen years later came the reign of terror. Henri IHiriae. now Count Durliic, was about lo be arrested, lui! succeeded In escaping .across the bor der. Tills was in llie ! qiliig, before the revolutionists had become so drunken with blond ;hul they sacri ficed women and children. Count Du line had been married, and his wife and her .daughter, Louise, wore about to follow him when they received a warning not to attempt to do so. Mine. Duriae, though beloved by nil the province in which she lived, was at last arrested and with her daughter taken to the eoneiergrrie in Paris. one (lay they were led out to lie tried. For what? For being of noble birth. A man sat behind a rude (able, ready lo act as judge and jury to send prisoners to the guillotine. Mine. Ini rtac and Louise sat waiting their turn, watching the people who wore pro nounced “traitors to France" inarched away to die. A portly man. who showed by his dress and hearing that he was an aristocrat, stood before this self constituted tribunal. “Your name?” asked the judge. “1 am the Marquis of Tours.” The judge flushed. "lio you remember, marquis, hunting for birds and shooting a maiden?” The marquis jailed, Inrt-mid nothing. "Traitor to France!” said the judge. “Take him away!” In half an hour the marquis’ head rolled into the basket. “Next “Those," said a gendarme, “are tlie Countess Duriae and her daughter." The judge started. "Madame,” he said, “you are net-used of being a traitor to France. What is your de fense?" "I make no defense. Defense would he useless.” “H’m!” said the judge. "Take these women to the little jail in ltue St. Jacques and bring them here tomor row for sentence. Tin- executioner is too busy today to attend to them.” That night a mu filed figure appeared before the little jail in Rue St. Jacques \ and presented an order for Mmc. and Louise Duriae. Throwing a mantle [ over each to conceal her features and ! especially her attire of a gentlewoman, ' he led them through some of the liar -1 rowest streets in Paris. Stopping sud denly beside a carriage and opening - the door, he bade them enter. Not : doubting for a moment that they were ■ going to the guillotine, they obeyed, | and tlielr conductor mounted the box ! beside the coachman, and they were driven beyond the barrier. Stopping now and again for fresh horses, they traveled until at last they heard tin* plashing of waves. Then they were directed to alight and were put into a I boat. I “Take this letter to Count Duriae, jnadajne." said their conductor. “u.u& THEj£BRUNSWIOKS DAILY NEWS ; tell him that the’mail who 'gavo it to you may soon be* executed as a traitor to France.” The prisoners were rowed to an Eng lish vessel standing off the coast and in ail hour wdro sailing for England. Once on board Mine. Duriae opened the letter to her'husband and read: Count— Eighteen years ago a fiend shot my daughter, nnid a noble saved tier for me. I huvti sent, the fiend to the g'ufilo'- tinc, and I send the .noble two lives for the one he gave me. MARY BLAKE CRANDALL. Virulent Cancer Cured.
