The News Publishing Company de

devote our space to such advertise

The News desires the subscribers

to come up and pay at once as their

1 irons wick’s shipping for the month
of July will exceed that of any other
July in the history of tin- port.
The city council should encourage
every movement that has behind it life
erection of factories, he they large or
small. .
We are told that Joe Chamberlain
imagines lie resembles the Apostle
Paul. Wnon did St. Paul ever wear
monocle?
"King Edward doing nicely," was
seldom said of linn before lie went on
the throne.
The New York World note-, that
two South Carolina candidates for
the United States senate have begun
to light just a.s though they were
elected and qualified.
In addition to many millions of dol
lars, John W. Mac Lay left the reputa
tion of a man who never forsook a
friend or forfeited his Word. That's
a pretty good estate itself.
The administration's terrible pun
ishment of men whose only offense is
killing innocent natives reminds us
of those narrowing scenes in the Mi
kado in which Kuko figures
Those people who ere criticising
Hobson for rescuing that silly St.
Bb. I antis girt, ought to stop and ask
themselves what they would have
about him if lie had let her drown.
The Roosevelt ami trust lull is
hot Vicing prepared for actual passage.
It is to serve tts n sword to hang over
the trusts and compel them to cough
up for the candidacy of the Rough
Rider.
Judge K. Willis Hart, the newly ap
pointed judge of the Brunswick cir
cuit. presided over the Glynn superi
or court for tne first time yesterday.
He presides with an easy grace and
bids fair to make ilto circuit a splen
did judge.
Tlio coming of the Const Line offi
cials to Brunswick yesterday has
started all kinds of silly rumors. As
the News said yesterday, these sen-,
t lenient only acquired possession
of the property a short time ngo, and
they simply eatue here to take a took
at Brunswick's terminal facilities.
Their visit at Cats time is not of spe
cial significance.
SHOULD SE ENCOURAGED.
We see no good reason why the city
council should not grant the request
of R. E. Briesenick for an extension
ot his ease on the ot at the foot of
Dartmouth street. Mr. Briesenick
comes to the council with the projiosi
tion that if his request is granted he
will at once erect and operate a large
boiler factory on The property and
make many other notable improve
ments on the plant he now has in op
eration.
Among other things he will so en
large his marine railway that any or
dinary vessel can be accommodated,
and thus a large revenue that now
goes to Jacksonville, Savannah and
other points for this class of work will
come to Brunswick.
Again, a boiler factory means more
men employed and more money paid
out for labor in tills city.
Jush such enterprises as tiiis is
what we want., and what e must have
and we should not lose this opportuni
ty to encourage this one.
We have in the past made liberal
concessions to outsiders who were
wiling to come here and Invest their
money; why not extend the same
spirit of 'liberality and enterprise to
one of our own citizoifg? We trust
the council will give tills matter the
serious consideration it. deserves.
AT LAST.
City council has at last decided to
convert that old market building to
mime good use
Wo commend the city council in gen
oral, and Alderman Franklin in par
ticular for this truly worthy resolu
tion.
For years that obi building 'has "been
standing on Brunswick's main thor
oughfare, a reminder of the old boom
days— an eye-sort- to our citizens, and
an unsightly wreck to visitors in gen
eral.
It has now been decided to convert
II into headquarters for our splendid
tiro department, and we are certainly
In sympathy with the movement.
in tno first place, the present home
*
of the fire department, is entirely too
small, n-nd unfit for the use- to which
it is now being put.
It is estimated that it will only
cost, something; like $2,500 to put the
old market building in good shape for
fire purposes, and we earnestly hope
that the resolution Introduced by Al
derman Franklin will lie carried out
to tin- letter.
That old building has been a grim
spectre so long that the hope of hav
ing- it remodeled really lul- us wILi
ilelig.it, and again we thank council
for finally taking action on the .sub
ject.
——- ——
Tne strike of the freight handlers
in Chicago is a serious one; the cost
to t'iie business interests of that city
alone amounts to a million dollars a
day, to say nothing of the losses of
the railroads and the strikers
If the big corporations "fall out and
chide and fight" there should be no
surprise when labor organizations
have disputes with corporations. Cor
porations who understand each other
and whose interests are similar. La
bor organizations and corporations
ate often confronted by conflicting
interests.
