WOMAN AND NOTORIETY.
It Is pretty hard to analyze toe mo
tives of a girl like Mamie Cerf.
She is the St. Louis young woman
who hurled herself Into the river to
force Richard Pearson Hobson to res
cue her. He did it as dramatic as
yon please.
Of course there is a practical side
of it.
Mr. Hobson was an idol. Ho has
done some stunts, oscillatory and oth
erwise, that got his name into the pa
pers in box car letters and all but
lost him 'nis head. Certain fathers,
who objected to having their daugh
ters kissel - certain husbands, who ob
jected to the pain of having this hand
some officer salute their wives, threat
ened at various times to "punch the
blooming head off Mr. Hobson."
He wanted to bold his job; be did
not want to be punched, and he
quit, kissing and posing.
That is how he became a monument
instead of an idol. In a measure he
belonged to the public,! and he would
not perform. Miss Cerf forced him to
descend from his imdcnial and again
become an idol. He performed admi
rably.
As for the girl—who is how with
her mother—there are others.
l,ove of notoriety seems mixed in
the very blood of some women.
They want red fire and brass band
effects all the time. Many of them
are girls and still they risk the se
vere criticism of society, forge!ting
that a woman's reputation is wlmt the
world makes it, and the world doesn't
go far beneath the surface or study
hearts or motives.
Girls like Mamie Cerf are a puzzle.
They have little of the peacock ill
their nature.
Once upon a time a Macon gill was
named as tho most, beautiful young
woman in the state. She was fragrant
and line, healthy and handsome- a
woman to excite admiration any
where.
She was also something of a fool.
Her favorite stunt was fainting. She
always lain bad at dancing parties.
She would "flop” in the middle of a
waltz or two-step, and Reginald or
Archie, or whoever the unlucky youth
happened to be, would have to carry
this 135 pounds of silliness to a seat.
I’retty soon she would come to, and
pale and languid, and Interesting, hold
court in a cozy corner, surrounded by
a bunch of young men. who wanted
to sympathize with such a delicate
creature.
And there wasn’t a tiling the mat
ter with her. She had an appetite
I'm pork and beans, and strength
enough to do a washing.
She was notoriety crazy, too old to
spank and not old enough to accumu
late the stock of common sense that
comes to most women sooner or later.
Don’t blame Miss Cert’ too much.
Some day there will creep into her
silly little head tile knowledge that,
acts like tiers tiring the kind of noto
riety that shames, and then her
cheeks will burn and scorch and alio
will wonder how she could ever have
done such a foolish tiling as to play
Mermaid to Richard Hobson’? Nep
tune.
