The binding twine trust that h;ul ropes around trio farmers of the coun try for a long time has met w..a defeat in Kansas. The country uses 180,U00,0v0 pounds ~of binder twine, ami Kansas, like other wueat producing sections, is a large consumer. Binder twine was selling at from 10 to 13 cents per pound, these prices being arbitrairy, fixed by the trust and which are out t alt proportion to the cost of pro ductiofl. Trust prices were 10 anil 13 cents a pound in some places and to these places the state product was shippim and offered upon the open market at $7.85 a hundred pounds. Tins was a body blow to the trust which immediately cut its figure down to 5 cents a hundred below trie price fixed by the state, making a saving of more than $3 per hundred pounds to the farmers of Kansas, or $2*0,000 or over. So successful has been the scheme that the capacity of the plant is to hr multiplied and the entire prison force put to work on n. There are 300 convicts working in the soil i oat mines, but the coai supply in Kansas is so great that the dusty diamonds arc not worth shipping, and barely worth the mining. Governor Stanley and other prominent officials are in la vor of closing the coai mines and putting the convicts Bo work in the more profitable occupation of twine making, if this is done the twine trust will Hue even greater competi tion and the farmers will enjoy a sav ing of muny thousands of dollars. The people who are trust ridden must do something in self defense and tho people of Kansas have set u good example, which ot(hers might, witli advantage emulate.
