WPDKESDAY morning r A trunk tournament, in which pygmy price's play an important part— | ami we add with emphasis that he who hesitates loses a good trunk It doesn’t matter whether you need a trunk just now —come and see th*m auy way. All ot these trunks are heavy canvas covered, strong hard wood slat's on all—some solo leather bound, some iron bound, some have two leather straps, heavy brass locks, some linen, some two frays with hat box compartment, two bottoms, one of which is sheet iron, and not one in the lot but will defy the fiercest luggage smasher that ever flung, kicked or jumped on an unoffending trunk. Some of these trunks are great, handsome, swell. jfc C. MeGARVEY. pP 316 Newcastle Street. TRULY “A GRAND OLDWHISKEY” USfclt&lllFP ;>i„> v.,*;,* •> , la the famous „ ? THE BTOBY “ ' IF A WITCH Did you never hear of Anne Hoi! we!!, the witch of Salem? No? It's an odd story. My grandfather gave it to my father, and my father gave it to me. What possessed the people of those days is a wonder to all of us now. I’ve thought that the devil plant ed the superstition in them for liis own purposes, but I, being a Scotch I’res bytertnn, am myself accounted a bit cranky in my religious notions. Anne Holliwell wlieu she was eight een years old was accused of witch craft. Mark Spooner, a big, strong fellow, wanted to marry her, but lie was a wicked one they said lie had secret meetings with Satan at midnight in the wood and Anne would have nothing to do with lilm. Moreover, she loved .loci 11 n llitt, son of Deacon 11allltt, who went off with the Roger Williams people. Joel was the reverse of Spooner, being a small, pale looking young man, but with a very Intellec tual countenance. He was not in fa vor with the congregation, however, because he openly denied the right of the church to burn out a woman’s tongue with a rodliot iron. Indeed, so great was the Indignation against his heretical protest that Joel came near paying the penalty of Ills rashness with his life. Now, 1 am not going to vouch for what I Intend to toll you. I’ll give it as I got it from others and their inter pretation of it. If you choose to take different views concerning It, I shall have no objection. Aline Holliwell was accused, os 1 have said, of witchcraft. My grand father used to say that Mark Spooner was at the bottom of the accusation with a view to getting Anne into his power, but this was not current at the time. However this be, Anne was tried and sentenced to be burned. When the fagots were prepared and Anno was being bound to the stake, a tall man stepped out of a wood nearby and advanced to the party. He wore a purple doublet, bordered with red, and red hose, while on tits bead was a eon leal hat with a single feather In It. There was something so singular In his appearance that the people turned from Anne Holliwell, tho stake and tlm fagots to look at him. "What do you with the wench?” asked the stranger. "We’re going to burn her. She's a witeli.” “A witch?” The speaker threw back his head and, displaying white, pointed teeth, gave a laugh. At lifst it was a simple ironical ha! ha! Then it had the ring of a trumpet in it. Then came back an echo, though there was no cm inenee or cliff to send it. "Who are you?” asked one of the pillars of the church who were eon dueling tho execution. “You strangely resemble Mark .Spooner, but you are not Mark Spooner, for Mark is but twenty-live, while you you may bu young or you may bo old.” “No matter who I am. I have come for the wench.” “Stand off!” cried several of the most pious men present, who laid no mind Unit the Lord's will should be inter fered with, lmt tile stranger, drawing bis sword, stepped up to Anne liolli- V ell and, cutting the eonls, led her away toward tho wood. Homo said that sparks were seen to fly from the point of tile sword, some that bis face suddenly from being quite handsome became so demoniacal that every man gave way instinctively before him. Ah for Anne, from the first she shrank away from him, but be took her by the wrist, and, though lie seemed to make no exertion, lie dragged her away from the fagots, after which she walked be- I side him passively, as though under a ! spell. In lliis way be took her to tha edge of the wood, where the two dis appeared, no one daring to tollow. An hour later Anne Holliwell, ac companied by Joel Hallitt, came back into the town. She was not further molested by the people. It was not generally known why, though the mas-' ter of ceremonies who was to have presided at her execution, after a long interview with tier, gave out that she could not have been a witch because the devil laid tried to rescue her mid bad failed. My grandfather claimed to have got the story of what happened alter she disappeared with the stranger from one of her children. Joe! Ilallitt on the night before the expected execution. Instead of giving way to bis grief. Spent tlic hours on his knees praying that the people might lie absolved from the supersti lions of witchcraft and persecution. When the hour of tiie execution came, in; was seized with an impulse to go and save the girl. Seeing a sword standing in the corner whose hilt was shaped like a cross, lie seized it and sallied forth. His course lay through the wood, and after entering it he met the stranger, leading Anne. Approach ing 1 belli, lie asked wldther they were going. Anne gave her lover an ap pealing look, and the man glared at him with such a demoniacal counte nance that Joel instinctively held up the sword in bis baud between himself and the stranger. Whether it was the cross on the hilt or an angelic expres sion that Anne afterward declared ap pea red on Joel's countenance, the strau gejy dreak-Laek and. crouching, slowly THR&fcRtJNsWtOK DAILY NEWS shrank away. Joel, now?believing'.that power had been given hinr.in answer to his prayer to save Aime, i.st ill holding up the dagger, drove the (stranger to the thickest part of tlie wood,\where he disappeared. My father always said, that my grandfather believed that Mark Spoon er arranged, with the ,devil to get Anne Holliwell for him in return for his own soul. ARTHUR CTI ESTER (LOVER IN'G.
