POOR ETTA COOK. That is a sad story that .comes to ns from New Haven; one of those we near of often and always brings a tinge of sorrow with it, and excites our sympathy for (lie young and thoughtless. Poor Etta Cook! She lived in an elysian biuhlod upon unrighteous bliss. Beguiled by the honeyed words of tho tempter, she lost her self in the quagmire of in iquitous passion, and was only dis turbed to sacrifice uer young life at g.c shrine of unholy love. What a pity! Here was tlie pride of a motaer’s love who had fondled her from fin' very cradle; some loving father had Indulged her every whim. She might have been queen of some heart and home; might have had dimpled arms entwined about her fleck, and respond ed to the name of mother, and endow ed, as she was, she might have oecu pied that place in society for which 1 nature had fashioned her. But alas! Inscrutible fate played the part. Her better sensibilities were dimmed by false ideas. She only lived in the prosent among her borrowed sweets; she tasted of the galling cup prescrib ed by fate; the ship of life lost its moorings, and a human soul drift- 1 cd out to u sea as black as physical darkness. We should pause in passing judg ment on this unhappy girl, and the errors of her brief young life. She was guileless, trusted with all the iu tcnsiiieat.on of a misguided love, and fell into the abyss of the dissembler. Then pause at. her tomb; and lay upon it a garland of sympathy, woven ’ iu the tenderness of a mother’s love, and indulge the hope that, she will bo granted absolution, if indeed there be ought to forgive, in tlie great beyond. And of him, who ereeped into this young life and destroyed it, wrung a .mother’s heart with grief and brought sorrow to a white mured fa ther? What of him? What shsiii he his portion? We leave him to tlie pangs of his own conscience The pastime of an nonr, the agonized death scene, tho memory of a newly made grave must bring its punishment. "Not a sparrow ralloth but its God doth know.” It is said L.iat. Governor Joseph E. Brown was probably the first man in Georgia to use a typewriter, and no man ever needed one more, ss>s tho Athens Banner, tie had a large cor resiMnidcucu, and like his mends, Alex. Stevens and Pete j’hweatt, lie wrote a horrid hand. When cones pond cuts first received letters thin: written, a few were somewhat net tled, thinking it a reflection on their intelligence, and replied taut he need “of go to the trouble of having Ids hitler printed, they could read writ ing.” LOW RATES TO CALIFORNIA.
