"Chairman Griggs performs a ne>
(Ssary service when he asks his pro
tei tionist critics to stick to their text,
t aey have made 01 tne fact that he in
cluded tin plate and lead in the list of
products which are sold at higher
prices in America than in foreign
tv untries, and have offered the e.’o
quent retort that we export practic
ally none of these things. He bids
them remember wire nails, wire rope,
shovels, sewing machines, pianos and
a 1 alf hundred other articles whien are
exported at prices from 40 to 100 per
cent less than they are sold to Amc-ri
cans under the protection of the bless-
I
el Eingley bill.
“Air. Griggs has an arsenal full of
the most damaging facts to which
there is no straightforward reply.Notu
ing can be urged in extenuation of a
system which probably permits manu
facturers to cnarge a higher price at
home than they secure in Europe, Uni
na and South America. No exporter
can deny it. The goods are exported
for sale in foreign warehouses at
prices which are well below domestic
rates. Manufacturers could not hold
the foreign trade, which is so useful
to them at times, and especially so in
seasons of dullness in the American
demand. If they did not sell at, the
world's price. The chain of evidence
is complete and the high tariff men
cannot wr!°’ ,r lo out from ?fiiJi , r Mr.
Griggs’ damning charge.”
Tnis is an incongruous state of af
fairs, truly. That goods, plus the cost
of transportation, should be sold al
the antipodes at a less price than is
asked for them in the counties or
states adjo,...ag the factories, is sim
ply outrageous, unless, inoeod. Lie
manufacturers chose to exercise their
philanthropy by disposing of their
property in foreign marts at a loss;
and even then It could be urged tnat
“charity begins at home.” But there
is no reason to suppose that the ex
port trade Is conducted at a loss; the
competition to secure it is too keen
to countenance any supposition other
tnan mat it yields an appreciated prof
it. Hence, the Times’ contention that
Lie Dinglcy bill really provides pro
tection for the foreign purchasers, Is
well taken, and can not lie iin pressed

ple.
