This assertion, the St. Louis paper says, is absurd, and adds: "Griggs Is repeating old prolenses which have been exposed many times. Tim country hoard them in ixxn, 18X1, 1888 and 1892. it ..id not. hear them In ISltli or in 1900, because the tariff did not llguro in those canvasses ex eept In a minor way, the silver Issue tmlng at the iront In oaeh ot them. There Is a desire on the part of a few of the younger democrats, like Griggs to make the tarilT one of the issues this year. The older heads of the par I,V. who vemembci-oHie drubbings they got when that question was at the front before are shy of it. and would la- glad lo say nothing about it. Griggs and the test oi the greenhorns are Retting themselves into shape to nr quire the same sort of experience,’’ \ The trouble is that the Globe Demo crat, as well as republicans generally, fear that the next campaign will be tnad,,- wii.ii ihe facin' a- an issue, and limy are endeavoring to throw the democrats off the track, rhe tvpubii enns fear the tariff Issue. They do not want to make n fight in ueiense of it. They know that the people condemn, amt are ready to vole against It. Even republican conven tions are constantly demanding tariff reform. The Globe-Democrat does not refer .to t 87(; when Ihe democrats, led by Tilde’h, won a great victory, lud were cheated out of it, li n a’ers to 18X0. 1881, 1,888 and 18:12. when (he democrats won two out (U |,„. four contests, the last being the most no talde anti tariff victory'in the history of the country. Mr. Cleveland lost upon this .issue ill 1888. by expressing ideas too far ahead oi the rank and tit,. <,r u u , voters, but In 1882. after four years of education upon the question, the voters of the country rallied arouuu the standard of tariff reform an l tnere was n landslide. And yet the Globe Democrat has the effrontery to say that in 1892 the democrats got a drub bing. They are ready lo take just such another. Chairman Griggs is right, and be has the welg.it of democratic opinion behind him In pushing the tariff issue to the front. The democrats want tariff reform and the country wants it, and If given an opportunity to vote for It In 1904 they will get it. The republicans fear the issue; it is to them a ghost that will not down, and they would run from it They are anxious for the democrats to adopt a platform similar to those of 1896 and 3900, for they feel‘that upon such they would have an easy victory. But the democratic party will not make such, a mistake for a third time and the fight will be-made uikjii tne tariff I as the leading issue. A HARD LUCK STORY. A Frankrort, lnd., dispatch to the .Cincinnati Enquirer, says: Milton Jones, a farmer, yesterday accidentally shot himself through the I left hand and loft leg, and again broke all known records of accidents, j “Four years ago a team ol horses ran away and threw Jones in a creek, knocking him senseless, and he was taken out of the stream apparently dead? tie revived, however, and a few months later was attacked by a mad bull and severely gored. He recovered and a little later, while blowing stumps with dynamite a premature explosion blew him thirty feet. He escaped with only a few bruises ant) lacerations. Then a horse kicked him, breaking five ribs and an arm. but a few months put him in shape to climb a tree for wild bee horn y, Ho fell and lodged in Hie fork of the tree, where lie remained for three i.ays and nignts until rescued. ■<’ managed to escape further accidents until this harvest, when, while helping a neighbor lo thresh, lie was struct on the head by a pitchfork, tin- lines penetrating ids skull. The surgeons sa.d he would die. lnd lie recovered. , "Yesterday Jones took Ills revolver to do a little target practice and it ac cidentally discharged, the bail plow ing through Ins hand and” teg. Bets art; offered that lie will recover.” Clio, the Atlanta elephant, put ol tho children, is dead, and now the Journal is ’heading a movement to buy another.
