EXPENSIVE CHRISTIANITY.
The Memphis Commercial-Appeal
publishes this timely editorial:
| “In the larger cities it is claimed
that the poor keep away from the
churches and do not attend services
as they used to, and many marvel
that this Is so. Many marvel that
poor men do not come forth, drink of
the breath-giving waters and be heal
ed.
Critics of the poor man usually for
got toat while his salvation is free,
theoretically at least, religion is an ex
pensive commodity that costs money
and ready money at that. Fashiona
ble churches arc for fashionable peo
ple who can afford private yachts on
the water, private boxes at i'ne the
aters, automobiles and all the good
things enjoyed by the few, and which
many can only read about without en
joying. A fashionable church in Wash
ington recently auctioned off i,s pews
and one of these sold for $2,700, and
in Lo larger cities larger figures are
sometimes paid.
While there are many churches that
are less expensive, all are expensive,
and the expense Is not easily borne by
toe poor man.
Religion in large cities has so many
trappings' and adjuncts, so many
things t’nat appeal to the imagination
and the artlstle feelings, music, paint
ings, fine buildings and ornaments
that it costs money, and money the
poor man lias hot.
Hence the street evangelist, Ihi
curbstone Joan the Baptist and the
Salvation Army furnish the poor man
whatever ot religious consolation he
enjoys.
Poor men are quite as religious as
ever. They do not all end lasliionanie
churches, but they fear Uod and keep
Ilia commandments alter their own
fushiuu ami in their own way
