Every day some new Industry
springs up in Brunswick. Small in
dustries are what makes the big city.
Atlanta has ordered anew elephant
to take tne place of Clio, but there is
no sign of tne depot coming next.
Tli is is tne season when the wise
merchant does his advertising. Are

The democrats of Alabama will
nominate their governor today. From
all indications and reports from there'
it will be a reo-hot one.

The work of improving the inner

For the first time In the history of
the country the people of the United
Stats are witnessing the nauseating
spaetacle of seeing the thief execu
tive of the nation and the members of
the cabinet doing the act of the spell
hinder tor votes. Roosevelt tuts not
only dedbauc'ned the great office lie
holds. Iml force of power has com
polled his cabinet ministers to take
the stump In his behalf, it is a won
der he does not rail upon the members
of th • supreme cour. to go on the ros
trum.
ARE DODGING.
And now comes Secretary Shaw who
poses as a tariff reformer, but. like
a good many other office holders. Jjo
i a ratuor artful dodger. The repub
lican leaders cauot fail to see that
l In' issue of tariff reform is one of
plowing importance and that they uo
see it is evidenced--by their repeated
aiUHiuneements from the stump that
/
they are in favor of it. Uut that
they are at hart opposed to any auen
legislation is only too apparent from
the artful manner in which they pro
pose to bring about the changes that
are needed. For instance. Secretary
Shaw, it is very evident, believes that
th people will demand a change in
the tariff laws, and, therefore, he sees
too wisdom of pretending at least Uu.
the republican party leaders see the
wisdom of such revision as is Jeslred.
On this question he is quoted as hav
ing said In a recent speech:
1 j v\ uePnver congress reaches Jive
conclusion that the friends of proteo
tlon are strong enough to conserva
tively moony certain schedules so as
to meet changed conditions and at
the same time succestully resist the
efforts of opposition to revise the
entire tariff law, thus paralysing bus
iness for a season, I am in favor of
it."
If. with a republican president, a
republican senate and a republican
house tne "friends of protection" are
not strong enough to modify any of
the schedules it would lie Interesting
to know wlo-n they hope to he able to
do. so. Apd these conditions are prima
facie evidence of Secretary’s Shaw's
insiucerety; but he goes a step fur
ther and demonstrates his opposition
to tariff revision still more clearly.
He says;
*‘l nave expressed some doubt, how
ever, about the wisdom of instructing
by resolutions or exacting pledges
from candidates from congress, when
the effort Is liable to precipitate a
protracted debate with very uncertain
results."
Mr Shaw is Jn reality opposed to
tariff reform of any kind as are near
ly all republicans, and is only making
a pretence of favoring what he feart
the people are going to demand.
FOR AUTUMN T^tADE.
We are now witriin one week of
the opepnlng of the autumn business
season. A long and extremely hot
summer in this section has almost
ended.
From the west, comes the report
that American crops will be the great
est in the history of the country.
Here in the south tne fruit and melon
crops have been large, and havo
brought, good prices.
There is every indication that cot
ton will demand good prices.
From the present outlook our mer
chants will enjoy an unusually large
and prosperous winter trade. They
are going to the great eastern bust
l
ness centers and markets to lay In
their stock of goods. Tne wise mer
chants will buy a large and well se
lected stock of goods for he sees
prosperous business ahead.
The outlook for an exceptionabiy
good business season was never
brighter. In fact, many are predicting
a record-breaking fall and winter bus
ness.

A minute parallax of about one-six

astounding result. This small parallax
Implies a distance from the earth equal
to about 12,000.000 times the sun’s dis
tance. This vast distance* would pro
duce a diminution of light of about
35’4 jnagnit tides, so that the sun placed
at the distance of At,aunts would be
reduced to a star of only 0% magni
tude: It wouid'riot be visible with an
opera glass! Arcturus is therefore in
round numbers 9V- magnitudes, or over
6,000 times brighter than the sun
would be at the same distance. As
suming the same density and bright
ness of surface as the sun, the diame
ter of Arcturus would therefore be
about seventy-nine times the sun’s di

its mass about 500,000 times the mass
of the sun figures well calculated to

An hour passed, and the passengers
