IT SEEMS A SHAME. A dispatch from Washington says the fascinations of golf have been tn. um.oing of a naval officer. He was booked for a long stay on shore, bu in an evil hour got to waggling at tee. After that he talked golf, dream ea golf and played golf wita such enthusiastic reguarity that the chief of the bureau to which he was attach ed reported him to the secretary of the navy for neglecting his duties, and recommended that he be sent to sea. The result is that the officer wil have to give up his golf and sad the ocean .blue for the next two or three years, perhaps longer. A MOSQUITO MISSION. The mosquito is getting to be quite an important personage these days, and the latest study of his tricks and tendencies has been conducted, accord ing to LTllustration, a Parisian jour nal, by certain French scientists who have been experimenting in regard to his predilections in the matter of color, A colony of the blood-thirsty little pests were confined in a glass cage made up of different tinted panes, and when left to themselves it was dis covered that they settled in rows tip on certain panes, while others were eschewed. Blue, it. seems, was their general preference, though all dark tints were more or loss attractive and yellow their special aversion. The first mentioned fact is In ac cord with everyone’s observation, pro bably, for few can have failed tty-no tice 'their fondness for black 'horse hair furniture and the second sug gests a remedy for persons who dwell in localities that are Infested by these sanguinary tax-gatherers. Yellow clothing, and the face and hands stained with some harmless yellow dye, ought, It would seem, to afford protection. If the Parisian experi ments are correct one is Inclined to wonder now the ancient Britons who went about with no clothing beyond an elegant painting of blue woad (whatever they may have been) ever survived the ordeal. For it seems likely that thero was mosquitoes in Great Britain in those days, since extensive fens and marshes were a feature of the landscape, though there are none ■now. And this last assertion reminds us of a curious fact. Why should Great Britain bo free from this scourge, when In corresponding latitudes on this side of the Atlantic,.and even just across the North sea In Sweeden and Norway, they literal)' swarm. It is fashlonablo to Investigate tho mosquito at present, so why should not somo insectivorous authority give his mind to tho solution of this prob lem? It offers a glorious opportunity for acquiring fame and benofluing mankind, for if the secret of the mos quito’s disappearance from, or non existence in, Great Britain can be dis covered, It would seem possible, per haps for less favored regions to get rid anlficially of the plague that na time has removed, or withheld, from those happy islands. It is recalled by the Springfield Re publican that the Shah, who is blaz ing forth in London now, is the same Shan who was there at tho time of Mr, Gladstone's golden wedding, and who made a great sensation by his i-efark when introduced to the you arable couple at their anniversary re ception. Being told tnat An. Glad stone had lived 50 years with out wife, his polygamous oretillal ma jesty solemuy observed that while it was very line to live fifty years with one wife. It was much finer to live one year with fifty wives. University ot Georgia. The load session of the. University el the state will open on September lidh.
