“A GLORIOUS VICTORY."
livery patriotic American Is, no
doubt, duly impressed with the "glori
ous victory” which Rear Admiral
r ranch* J. Higginson has won over the
blood-thirsty and dashing enemy,
Commander John E. Pillsbury. It
demonstrates that tne coast of the
Adan tic is quite safe from naval at
tack—ln time of peace when the ocean
Is rather rough. The chances of es
cape from danger are quite over
whelming when the attacking fleet Is
a “hum” little old squadron of three
rather out-of-date vessels and the
defending force Is a fleet of thirteen
vessels of more than twice the theore
tical strength.' In real strength the
difference was actually tnree times
two, or even worse than that; hut it. is
not worth mentioning such trifles.
Then, according to the rules of the
game, the Pillsbury l fleet was to go
slow, not more than eight knots an
hour. It was necessary that the
“enemy” should be overtaken in order
to capture him.
Everybody will feel secure at least
until there is a war. The American
coast is defended. To be sure, in a
real war England, or France, or Ger
many, for instance, would hardly try
to cover the whole New England coast
with .three fourth-class war vessels.
The fighting strength would hardly be
102 to 45 in favor of the Americans.
A real enemy might not wait oblig
ingly with an inferior squadron for the
United States forces to catch up. The
ship or the fleet is sighted, a signal,
presto, the thing is arranged and a
“glorious victory nas been negotia
ted. Now a foreign enemy might not
know so promptly when the time came
to throw up its hands. It. might for
get Iho cue-line even if it did come
open the- Htage according to schedule.
But there is no need of carping at
ibi- “victory.’’ Uncle Sam and his
subjects have I anight battleships and
Paid for them—at the rate of several
hundred thousand dollars per ton, and
the least tne nation might have out of
them is a week's sport now and then.
Tne men in blue and gold and while
duck are not kept exclusively as or
■laments for society. Let us have more
sham naval wars and more "glorious
victories.” It Is healthful and inno
cent sport, and one fault of American
life is taking things too seriously.
