The Many friends of Mr. and Mrs. Constance Miller will regret to know the critical illness of their little son, Eugene. who is suffering wjth conges tion of the stomach. An excursion, of some sixteen car loads reacheu the city irorn Atlanta yesterday morning. They are a good matured crowd and are spending the time taking in the town generally. Cashier Dobbins of the local Mal lory office will accompany .1. S. Ray mond to the Mobile office to serve in n similar 'capacity. His Brunswick friends will regretjhis departure. A great deal of interest is being manifested in the game of baseball be tween Brunswick and Darien next Wednesday. The club from Darien will bring over a large excursion. The Waycross baseball club are trying, to arrange for three games with Brunswick, to be played in this city next week. Brunswick has won in every game played this year.- Way cross Herald. The police department have insti tuted a systematic searen for the gang of thieves now at work in this city and it is safe to say that a num ber of them will be bagged very shortly. Chas. Cohen, a brother of Abram Cohen, colored, who is to hang in Sa vannah on September mu. is taking up a subscription for the purpose of bringing his brother's body here. The condemned man formerly lived in Brunswick. Postmaster Brown has just received from tlie department a n\w and hand some regulation typewriter, as is used in all of the larger postoffices of the country. The machine is a splendid one and will oe a great convenience to t.ie office here. B. H. Levy Bros. & Cos. were busy yesterday unloading a portion of their new fall stock of gents furnishings, which by the way is an unusually handsome display. Macon, Ga., Aug. 30.—Argument has been concluded in the Rogers and Joiner case that has been before Ref eree Proudfit in bankruptcy for sever al days. Several speeches were made. The referee has reserved his decision. This is the branch of the case involv ing the Pulaski Mercantile compa ny. The question to bo. decided Is whether the company is a corporation or a partnership. If it is decided that it is only a partnership in business it will be added to the assets of the Rogers & Joiner company, but if if is a corporation, then only the shares of stock owned by Mr. Joiner in the concern will be subject to creditors. The general case of Rogers & Joiner seems to have numerous branches. Wanted at Charlotte. Charlotte, N. C., Aug. 30.—Will Har ris, white, who Is wanted here badly, has just been located by the local offi cers in Atlanta, where he is serving time for counterfeiting. Harris' term will not expire before 1904, and Sher iff Wallace has notified the Atlanta officials that he wants him when they are through with him. Harris made his last escape froii% the county ,Jail here by digging through a brick wall. W-hi 1 at the convict camp of the county he escaped twice. Mangled by Engine, Raleigh, Aug. 30, —Charles Morrow, of a prominent Gastonia family, lost both of his legs through a distressing accident. Young Morrow went down to the Southern depot to see his sister off on a train. As the train pulled out from the station Morrow caught his foot in some loose mail sacks ly ing around and fell in front of the engine. Both limbs were horribly mutilated, and had to be amputated, one above and the other below the knee. Train Runs Into Fallen Tree. Jackson, .Miss., Aug. 30. —A west bound passenger train on the Queen and Crescent crashed into a tree which had been blown across the track 3 miles west of Jackson. Fireman Brunston, a negro, was killed. En gineer John Jones was fatally hurt, and three mail clerks were painfully bruised. The 65 passengers were badly shaken up. Traffic was sus pended for several hours. President Invited to Huntsville. Chattanooga, Tenn., Aug. 30.—A spe cial to The News from Huntsville, Ala., says that an official invitation has been telegraphed to President Rooeevelt to extend his visit from Chattanooga to that city next month. Rev. W. F. Holliusworth has re turned from ids vacation and will re sume services at the Presbyterian church todnv at file usual hours. Rev. J. A. Iteis, formerly of Bruns wick, now of Atlanta, arrived yester day morning to spend a few days in this city. His many friends are de lighted to welcome him among them, and will learn with pleasure that he will officiate at mass this morning in the Catholic church, where he will de liver one of the splendid sermons for which he is noted. Will Submit to Arbitration. Chicago, Aug. 30.—8 y a unanimous vote the members of Hie Street Car Men’s union of the north and west sides last night voted to submit to ar> bitration their differences with the Union and Consolidated Traction com panies. Clarence Harrow was named as arbitrator for the union. The con duct, of the entire matter was left in the hands of the executive commit tee, who will meet today to draw up the schedule of grievances to the board of arbitration. Vanderbilt Gives Up Automoblling. New York, Aug. 30.—W. K. Vander bilt, Jr., who is credited with having driven an automobile faster for a mile than any other person, lias announce), according to a Herald dispatch from Newport, R. 1., his permanent, retire ment. from automoblling as a sport. Murderer Safe In Penitentiary. Pensacola, Fla., Aug. 3ft.—Under a military guard “Sonny” Thompson, the negro who assaulted Mrs. Delia Dixon, an aged white woman, has been sent to TalbUiassee for safekeeping. A company S' state militia was on guard at the jail here all last night. The mob, composed largely of Mrs. Dixon's neighbors, was demonstrative for a time, but finally dispersed. Transport Buford Overdue. San Francisco,, Aug, 30.—An un usually slow trip from the Philippines is being made by the transport Bu ford, Captain Croske/. The vessel sailed from Nagasaki on Aug. 5, and is, therefore, ouc 24 days. On hoard are 4G2 men of 'he Eighth infantry and 104 men of the Twenty-fifth infantry, besides ft number of salon passengers. Tysinger Is Nominated. laibotton, Ga., Aug. 30. —Delegates representing Upson, Harris and Tal bot coulees met in Talbotton and nominated Hon, B. L. Tysinger tor for the twenty-fifth district. Big Combination Proposed. Sharon, Pa., Aug. 80. —A combine tion of the foremost malleable iron concerns, of this country, with & cap italization of $25,000,000, is under con sideration and will probably soon be effected. According to the reported plans the headquarters of the comol nation will be In Chicago, where the National Malleable Iron company, the largest concern of the kind in the United States, has Its home offices. Supposed He Was Murdered. Fort Worth. Tex., Aug. 30.—The life less body of Orion Nathan Wartenbec, a railroad conductor, late of Rock Is land, 111., was found this morning in North Fort Worth. It is supposed lie was murdered. Documents show him to have been a member of the Rock Island division, Order Railway Con ductors. He is not known here. Filthy Temples In India. The 102d session of the University of the state will open on September 18th. This institution is organized in three departments, Academic, Law and Agricultural.
