Sunday Morning. PLANS NOW COMPLETED FOR FIRE QUARTERS COUNCIL WILL ACT THURSDAY BOWEN & THOMAS, THE CON TRACTORS WILL SUBMIT THEIR PROPOSITION. riNC QUARIERS PROPO3ED Architect Bowen Has Everything Pre pared and it is Hoped That Council Will Accept His Offer. W. H. Bowen, the well known ar chitect of Fne firm of Bowen A Thom as, contractors, has just completed the plans for the proposed new fire head quarters at the corner of Newcastle and Mansfield streets, on the old mar ket building site. The plan as aranged by Mr. Bowen, It' accepted by the city, will gtve Brunswick the handsomest and one of the most up to date fire headquarters - In tne state. The building, as planned, will be 55 feel front by 90 feet deep; will nave a frontage on Newcastle street and la to he built of brick, and two Btories high and will he patterned after the most approved fire quarters in the country. . .It Is proposed by t.ie city council to tear down the old buildings now used for fire purposes and use the material In them for the new structure. This Is a very good idea and will mater ially reduce the cost of the proposed si ructure. i •, The News earnestly hopes that the council will se Its way clear to de- Kde upon Mr. Bowen's plans and give 'ais firm the contract for the work. The present quarters are totally un fit for the purpose for which they are being used, are In a very had condition and It is understood that the main building Is unsafe and is practically In a state of callapse. Again the old market building is, and for years has been an eye-sore to visitors and a humiliation to the peo ple of Brunswick. It is unsceiningly in appearance and gives the visitor to the city a very bad impression of our progressivenea. If Ihe council sees 111 to accept the plan of Mr. Bowen the public can rest, assured that the city will have a build . ing unexcelled in architectural de sign and general appearance for the splendid work of Messrs. Bowen A Thomas, on other contracts in the city, Is conclusive testimony that they Hre In position to do the very best character of work and at prices suf ficiently reasonable to insure the very best of workmanship, skill and pro ficiency. It Is to be sincerely hoped Hint this greatly needed Improvement will be made without further delay. ALWAYS BUSY. Something of the Amount of Work A. H. Baker, the Well Known Plumber Is Now Doing. The people of Ibis city are mats ually fortunate in having in their midst such a plumbing concern as that of A. IT. Baker. The mater of plumb ing is an Important one, since it deals largely with the nuerdon of sanita tion, and In a moos are effects the health of the e immunity. Mr. Baker has m ide fur himself an unenviable reptt stion, rn>t only fo’ the high grade.of worn that le does, but with which he fills his many con tracts. * He does any and everything In the plumbing and gas fitting line, and in fact, that "Baker did the work" is at all times tne best guarantee that It was well done. Among the many jobs which ho has recently completed and now working on may be mentioned the following new buildings: C. L. Candler, K. 1). M. Strac.han. J. J. Idssner, Mrs. Watt, new electric power house at .lekyl. residence at Clapp’s modern farm and considerable work on \arlou3 addit ions to the Jekyl Island club house. These of course are only a few of the many contracts ho has on hand hut their character indicates the fact that he is doing the very best class of work in the city. His headquarters are located on Gloucester street and they are un questionably 'among the best equippci in tuts sot ion of the state. A LEADING DRUGSTORE. Smith’s Pharmacy Has Grown Won derfully and Ranks Among the Best in the State. It is always a great pleasure to chronicle signal successes, hut it is more so when the object of congrat ulation chances to he comparatively new enterprises and one that was compelled to start lrom the very ground and build up. About two years ago, J. Stovall Smith, of Atlanta, came to this city and purchased the old Crovntt drug store at the corner of Newcastle and Monk streets, and with that indomln itable spirit characteristic of a,. At lanta folk, he went to work rehabilit ate the business and now well he suc ceeded is best evidenced when it is stated that it is today one of the handsomest, as well as best regulated drug stores in the city or in south Georgia. Mr. Smith makes a specialty of everything In the drug line an.l pays special attention to tne prescription department., which Is under his direct supervision. He carries a full line of druggist's specialties, consisting of toilet articles, soaps, hair and toot, brushes, and In fact everything us ually to he found in u first class drug store. In addition to the other depart ments of the business, Mr. Smith also manufactures a number of well known articles, which find sale In all sect lons of Georgia, as well as Florida, Ala bama and South Caorlina. Among the best of tnese preparatores is the well known armoniatic extract of blackberry and rhubarb, a superb cure for dysentery, cholera, diarrhoea, and summer complaints generally, which nas a large sale in all sections of the country. The News eheerfudy commends Smith’s Pharmacy to the public and fill patrons can expett the best ser vice lit the most reasontblc prtxt. Virulent Cancer Cured. Startliug proof of a wonderful ad vance in medicine Is given by druggist G. W. Roberts, of Elizabeth. W. Va. An old man there hud long suffered with what good doctors pronounced incurable cancer. They believed his case hopelesu till, he n.ad Electric Hitters ami applied llucklon's Arnica Salve, which treatment completely cured him. JUROR HAS A WORD 10 sai HE TERSELY DISCUSSED THE LAST ACT OF THE JURY COMMISSIONERS. ABOUT IH METHODS USED Many Large Tax Payers Left From the Grand and Petit Jury Lists— A Tax Payer Talks on Matter. Editor Daily News: I noticed the criticism in your val uable paper yesterday morning of tne drawing of the grand and petit jurors for the next two years and while it is a matter of indifference it is well that a fearless press Is ready at all times to condemn the wrong and up hold the right. The jury commissioners are the sole judges of the qualifications of Jurors. Judges who are dressed in a little brief authority are often led as tray by false representations as to tne qualifications of those he appoints to positions, positions which largely do minate the court judges of the super ior court of the state are as much re quired under their oath of office, to appoint upright and intelligent jury commissioners as K.ey, the commis sioners, to select upright and intelli gent citizens to serve on the grand and petit jurors. During the last revision tn the jury list, there has been a number stricken from me box who are the peer of any member of that commission, and the superior tn intelligence and unrignt ness w some who compose that board. Hen and citizens o. Brunswick, who have paid the state, county and city more taxes than the upright and intel ligent commissioners ever dreamed of in their most voricious avarice. The word necessary would stagger tne in telligence of some of the commission ers and the word upright could he an swermt by the record of a railroad company. Truly, we live in a strange age. Efficiency is gauged by syco phancy, unrigntness by how much you can mulct your employes, if the right and intelligent commissioners desire to answer this the writer is ready to respond. JUROR. A.
