Tlie steel trust is certainly not an
infant industry.
Wait awhile. The News has a
search light out.
The office of president of Cuba
seems to >e a hot brick.
And now comes a fool who says he
can tunnel too Atlantic.
The Rome Tribune enlls Secretary
Cottelyou "a jolly good fellow.’’
The personal pronoun cuts a big
figure in Roosevelt's vocabulary.
Those who wished it would rain
have no kick coming. They got it.
Georgia seems to be pieased wit;
her two senators and she should he.
The Georgia ftirmer should be
happy. Coitton js bringing a good

The entire revenue of the state
lor the present year will be about $3.
COO,OOO.
The News is being commended on
all sides for its endeavor to have the
light, turned.
The News will pay $2.00 for the
best article on "twenty years a pro
fessional juror.”
Talking a out professional jurors,
wouldn’t some members of the jury
commission jar you?
The time Is coming when ibe pro
fessional man will advertise just as
much as. the merchant.
The News wants to see more farms
in Glynn county. The land is too
valuable to stand idle.
South Carolina will have a second
promary today. They nave perpetual
polities in the Palmetto state.
- The jury business seems to bo
catching. Two other counties in
Georgia are in the same trouble.
Green and Gaynor are tourists, but
they like Canada so well they are
going to remain tnore permanently.
They are trying to build a railroad
In Illinois that wii. speed a train
along at the rate of 100 miles an hour.
The mimic war cost the government
thousands of dollars, hut it is best
alter alt. We want io see the sol
diers do something, even If it does
tost money.
The primary system has come to
stay. It has given abundant success
in Georgia. It worked Uk< a charm
in Alabama its first trial, and is des
tined to become very popular in Flor
ida.
WE ARE NOT ALONE.
It seems that Glynn is not the only
county in the state, where the jury
box has been contaminate*. ami pollu
ted, at the expense of good citizens and
honest tax payers.
Ine following Item appeared in the
Savannah Morning News, of yesterday
under a Griffin date line:
The biggest political sensation
Spalding county has known in years
was sprung yesterday when it aecame
known that .1. A. Brooks was to op
pose William M. Thomas, the present
incumbent, and democratic nominee
for clerk of the superior court of this
county. Mr. Brooks, in his announce
ment, says that he makes the race “at
the request and solicitation of many
citizens and voters, who feel that they
and other have been mistreated and
reflected on by the present incumbent
in the use of his influence with the
jury commissioners.”
Last month when the jury commis
sioners revised the jury list they drop
ped many names from the list, and
their action has caused much dissatis
faction throughout the county. It is
claimed that n.r. Thomas, who was
clerk of the hoard, was instrumental
in having Ihe names s-rnkon from the
list, and dissatisfied ones began to
cast about to i.nd a man to oppose him
ip the coming election. A commit
tee waited upon Mr. Brooks several
days since, asking him to make the
race, but not until yesterday afternoon
.lid lu- decide to do so.
If Clerk Thomas tampered with
the jury list of his county, then he
deserves defeat of the people.
Those who indulge In this reprehen
sible work may rest assured mat they
will be severely rebuked Wiien the
opportunity presents itself.
NEW FIRE HEADQUARTERS.
It. is to he hoped that the city
council will see its way clear to ac
cept tne proposed plan, as made by
contractor Bowen, for the new fire
quarters.
The present home of the department
is totally inadequate for the -needs of
the city, besides we have it on the
very best of authority that the build
ings are both unsafe and are actually
in a state of collapse.
in view of these facts coupled with
(lie further one (tint the old market
building is now under construction
and that the cost of completing it in
such a way. that it will make a fine
headquarters, will not lie very large,
it seems that the city would make a
good deal by having the work clone.
According to the plans, the new
building will not only make good qu:ir
ters for the lire department, hut it
will be one of the handsomest struc
lures in the city and wilt be an orna
ment to tne section in which It is to
be located.
Sooner or later this charge will
have to be made and we see no good
reason why it shoti.i not be done at
this time.
We are sure taat. the members of the
council will act for the best interest
ol the city In the matter.
King i-iward has been hobnobbing
with our friend Andrew Carnegie, lb
will probably touch 'him for a loan.
olumlms has bright prospects for
(tie future and her citizens are learn
ing the valuable lesson of pulling to
gether for the common good. There
should be no division when the good
of the city is at stage.
"The only criticism to he made of
tne president’s address on the
trusts," says the Boston Dost. “is that
it misses altogether the point on which
tne people are concerned, anxious, and
aroused as nearly to revolt as is
possible in a community or law ami
order. This point is how to restrain
the trusts from exacting oxtoi Donate
prices from the American people for
their products.”
