Utile authority makes big fools of
some people.
Brunswick is now enjoying a genu
ine building boom.
Several prominent South Caroiinlan
are occupying seats on the anxious
bench this morning.
Work will begin on the public build
ing today arm it Is understood that it
will he rapidly pushed ahead.

• Roosevelt seems to lie ashamed o r
his “Georgia cousins." He lias men
tioned the fact that lie has relatives
in this state.
If experienc'd jurors count for any
thing, some of tiie present jury coin
missioners ought to have diplomas of
many years standing.
That taking names out of the jury
box disease must lie catching. Sev
eral Georgia counties are taking a
dose oi the same medicine.
The naval maneuvers now over, the
military ones are to begin. Anything
to spend the people’s money seems to
■ e the slogan of the administration.
.he News is not kicking because
new names were not added to the jury
list, but we do think it a sham? that
the names of intelligent honorable men
were stricken.
If President Roosevelt really loves
Ids mother's state and the memory of
"•at good woman, he should cut out
entertaining Booker Washingtons at
the Nation’s table.
In the appointment of Hon. Samuel
H. Adams to the supreme bench. Gov.
t audler has made a wise selection and
one that will give satisfaction In all
sections of the state.
‘he papers gave a great dea, of pro
minence to a gas explosion which oc
curred in Atlanta some days ago, but
in our judgment it is an every day oc
curence in Georgia’s big city.
Rear Admiral Thos. O. Selfridge is
the oldest officer of our navy. He is
supposed to be 99. His son. Rear Ad
miral Thos. O. Selfridge. Jr., is also
retired, being 66 years of age.
FOR BET itR STREETS.
The city council is now interested
in the very important question of bet
terments in the way of city paving
and we are certainly pleased to note
this fact.
Few subjects are of more deep con
cern to a municipality than that of
good streets and it must be admitted
that there is great room for improve
ment in all the thoroughfares of the
city.
As an experiment it is proposed to
pave Newcastle, from G to Hanover
park with a mixture of Augusta gravel
and oyster shells. The work has
been completed from G to F streets,
and the results have been very satis
factory.
A good system of paved streets
means a wonderful increase in the tax
able values of the city, with a cor
responding increase in receipts in the
way of taxes; it. means a great im
provement in the appearance of the*
city in general and Bt a substantia!
development along the line of true
progressiveness.
As we say, we are pleased that the
city council how has this very im
portant matter under consideration ami
we arc sure that it will receive able
and earnest attention at their hands.
ITS POLITICS.
Some of the gentlemen who were
grand jurors last, year, nut whose
names are not on the present list;
1.. W. Beach, G. vV. Blanton, A. O.
Wain. G. W. Cline, I!. Dart, O. W.
Coates, O. W. Cole, James S. Wright.
Tomorrow the ..cwh win print a
number of names which have be n
added to the list. We ask the pub
lic to quietly figure on tnc past poll
t.ical anillation of those dropped from
the list and those added to fho list
of grand jurors.
We are going to figure on the petit
jury in a day or two and then the
public will see that some u.rty work
was done.
Roosevelt was in a "grin's -shot tit the
spot on which his mother was born
day before yesterday. If she knew
of that Booker Washington incident
she would have turned over in her
grave.
The movement now on foot to widen
Oglethorpe street is unquestionably
a good one and one that will 'be a
great convenience to the wholesale
houses now seeking that street for
homes.
“Elephant cars” the large leafed
plants that are used to ornament
lawns—are said to be good to eat. It
is use,, for food in Japan, Africa and
elsewhere. The botanic name is the
caladtum.
It, was quite a pleasing sigh to see
the trains of tne 11. & B. arriving and
departing from the union station yes
terday. We are indulging the hope
that this will be a regular thing in a
short time.
Judges of the superior courts should
be very careful in whom they vest the
sacred province of passing upon the
qualifications of citizens as regards
the question of jury service, it often
happens that the commissioner him
self is not competent to pass upon tais
very important matter.
The Washington correspondent of
the New York Evening Post, who has
been observing the congressional cam
paign from a non partisan point ol
view, has reached the conclusion that
neither political party is extremely
tesirous of obtaining control of the
next House immediately preceding the
presidential election, ue figures out
that the great commercial interests
of the country arc indifferent to lie
pulilican success, because taey fear
that with a strong Republican major
ity anti-trust legislation mat may be
urged by the Pres.uent will be adopt
ed. So far as the Democrats are con
cerned. he says, “it admits of easy de
monstration that the Democrats, as a
party, will not be benefited by a cap
ture of the House next November.
Senator Vest and iho Democratic edi
tors' who nave prevailing opinion,
are sound in their position."
