The street fair season will soon he on In Georgia. The strike situation-is really get ting serious now. Precedents stand no show with Pres ident Roosevelt. Roosevelt seems to lie a goou color, ed delegate grafter. We are waiting anxiously for Gov ernor Terrell’s list of colonels. Murdering women seems to he a hobby in New York right about now. There will be interesting reading in next Sunday's News. Be sure and get a eopy. Of course those New York republi cans endorsed Roosevelt. Platt said they must. To an outsider it looks very much like Captain Howell will be Atlanta's next mayor. Tile papers In some of our neighbor cttles are wanting tree commissions and It Is u good Idea. William A. Gaston is the democrat ic' nominee for governor of Massachu setts. We ’hope it will bo “you first, my dear Gaston/’ from present appearances we are constrained to believe that matters in the republican ranks of the district are smooth again. Twenty-five candidates are after Speaker Henderson's congressional nomination. This is certainly not n case of the office seeking the man. The Valdosta Times vouches for it money on the market as a hale of eot that a good fai beef will bring as much ton and yet beef can be raised for much less money. An exchange says Attorney General Knox is back but will not talk. Why shoiiidn’s he? Toe people pay the hills and tney have a right to know of any and at! public aflintrs. William Hooper Young, a nephew of llrigham Young.is in a fair way to the electrocution chair for murdering a woman. Judging from newspaper re ports there seems to be no doubt about his guilt. ’Die Boston Post says: "The truth Is that the exactions of the trusts have passed the theoretical stage and have become very practical. They have come home to the people and are felt in every 'household. And the peo ple are ready for revolt. They are not only ready; they have begun it. Not only In lowa, t"jt in Massachusetts is is the standard of rebellion raised and carried in republican Lands.” — The Cleveland Plain Dealer says: "Now President Roosevelt knows ex actly where he stands with the TTtnh republicans. They are for him enthu siastically in 1904, provided he keeps silent from tnis time on regarding reciprocity. He can bang and batter toe trusts as much as he pleases, but if be dare say ‘reciprocity.’ In con nection with Cuba they will bombard him with beets when the national con vention Is held." YOUR SENSE OF DUTY. . * Teachers and parents are asked to consider the statement that a seuse of duty is the foundation of real educa tion and the basis ot success. What ever has been achieved of real Impor tance In the world has been based up on a sense of duty. Religion itself is founded upon duty, and its main teach ings deal with questions of duty—the duty of men and women toward each other and toward their Creator. Children’s minds will bo strength ened, their work made easier nnd their ambition stimulated If they can be made to feel toward duty that It is not repulsive, but that It offers nn op portunity for achievement, an oppor tunity for every individual to prove his worth and'tliut lie deserves to succeed. If duty can be strongly developed in tlie mind of a young child, the effect will remain through life and make that child's existence useful. Parents should Impress upon their children-and young people should im press upon themselves—the fact that a sense of duty is the noblest, most man ly and at the same time most woman ly of qualities. The average small boy thinks that there iB something “soft" alaint a duti ful boy. He should be taught that what made Washington a tighter and Lincoln great among ills fellows was nothing else than a sense of duty to their country. What makes a fireman brave is a sense of duty. A sense of duty is at the foundation of every effort made to provide for children, to meet the obli gations of life honestly. The German philosopher Fichte, ns admirable a moral character as the world has known, ns per fectly us any the beauty of it life in spired by a sense of duty, and it Is u life which may be well studied by those engaged In shaping the charac ter of the young. The very keynote of his philosophical system was based on duty. “Unsere Welt Ist tins versiunlichte Material un serer Ptlicht,” said he. This idea —that our world Is but the material incarnuthm of our duty-lie taught, and, wliut is more, he practiced what he preached. One preacher who practices his preachings thoroughly Is worth many of the other kind, no matter how elo quent the others. And Fichte prac ticed his beliefs. When lie was poor and a young tutor, he set a good ex ample lo every teacher. Asa tutor he made his living, but he knew that his duty to the child Intrusted to him was the principal thing. iTe knew also that every child is really formed in character and morals by the lullueucc of Us parents. Fichte kept a Journal devoted lo the altitude of his employers toward their child—his pupil. Every week lie told them the mistakes they had made and held them accountable for spoiling the child through flattery, too much kind ness, 111 Judged severity or In what ever way. Strange to say. the parents actually put up with this for two whole years, so great was their ad miration for the young tutor's moral character. Duty well Ingrained In the soul will keep a uiau on the right path in easy times and In hard times. Fichte Is quoted here because uo man better tlinn lie proves the power of a sense of duty. In small things duty guided him. and It guided him Ht the eml. lie was just past the half century of Ills age and had been gloriously suc cessful. He had been called to the chair of philosophy at Berlin, and no teacher of truth hud ever been more loved or more admired. On a certain day he was to lecture, aud lie had cho sen “Duty” for his subject, llis coun try was at war and threatened with Invasion and absolute annihilation of her liberties. Flcbte, who lmd talked much of the little duties of life, talked on tills day of man’s duty to Ids country. The sound of drums calling for conscripts frequently Interrupted hjs lecture. He told the listening young man that each man’s duty is to lend his individual strength and life to his country In time of danger. It was a marvelous address, nnd it ended well. For at the close he said to ills great crowd of admiring students: “This course of lectures will be suspended until the end of the campaign. We shall resume them iu a free country or die in the attempt to recover her free dom.” Fichte left his lecture platform to en list as a simple soldier, and, needless to say, his students followed his exam ple in crowds. That was at the be ginning of the campaign of 1813, but the example Is good enough to last un -111 now and for many hundred years to come. A year later, aged fifty-two, he died, lie caught the fever while caring for those afflicted, among others for his own wife, who had gone with the army as nurse. Make duty a strong part of your child's or your pupil’s moral educa tion. A sense of duty impels men to struggle on and do their best even in the face of failure; a sense of duty im pels the successful man to make good use of his success. The hideous, emp ty, selfish lives of the self indulgent class are based upon utter lack of the sense of duty. In the education of a child moral teachings should come first: In a child’s mental equipment moral qualities should be first consid ered. By example, precept, argument and through history Impress upon your children the fact that without a sense of duty they are unworthy of the op portunities that life offers to men in this world.—New York Journal.
