The Figaro relates the following an ecdote about Frederic Leinaitre: "Hit hud acted with marvelous success in u play by D'Euncry and Marc Fournier when one evening after the second or third per forma nee he "was suddenly ailtlressetl by a stranger, ‘How much will you take to be 111 tomorrow, the day after tomorrow and for a month';' "I.emaltre dragged the unknown un der a street lantern and looked'ut him. He was a well known writer. It is you!’ said the actor. ‘Why do you wish me to be Hi ?’ "The other hesitated slightly as lie explained bis strange proposition. Ho was inspired by an insane hatred to ward Marc Fournier and had sworn lo avenge himself on his enemy by all conceivable means. ‘Help me to wreck his drama,’ lie roneludod. ‘and I will make you rich. 1 have the means to do !t. You earn a great deal. 1 will give you ten times as much for six months longer than your piece will last. Will you agree'/' “I.emaltre had quickly recovered himself. He seized the man by the col lar, shook him hard for a minute and then, with a vigorous kiek, thrust him away, crying: ‘Hew much will 1 take? Thirty pieces of silver. Judas!’ “An old actor who told the story added, 'How often has Frederic l.e lnaitre sighed In my pr< .-.once when he recalled the episode, "Alas. 1 shall nev er bo aide to reproduce the gesture and the accent of that moment!”’” lo Not Sleep on \ nr I.efl Side. When a imfient complains of a bad taste In his mouth every morning on waking up, says a physician, the first question I ask him is as to the position he assumes when going to sleep. An immense number of people sleep on the left side, and ihis is the most com mon cause of the unpleasant taste which is generally aUribuled to dys pepsia. If a meal lias been taken with in two or three hours ol* going to bed, to sleep oil the left side is to give the stomach a task which it is diilicult in the extreme to perforin. The student of anatomy kn *vs that all food enters and leaves the stomach on the right side, and lienee sleeping on the left , side soon after eating Involves a sort of pumping operation which is any- , thing but conducive to sound repose. I The notion of the heart is also inter fered with considerably, and the lungs j are unduly compressed. It is probable j that lying on the back is the most nat ural position, but few men can rest easily so, and hence It is best to cult!- ; rate the habit of sleeping on the right side it is very largely a matter of habit, and the sooner it is acquired the better for the sleeper and the worse for the physician. Tle Bucket Shop. The name bucket shop Is said to have originated in Chicago when legit imate brokers would not; handle an or der for less than 5.000 bushels, and a lot of places sprang up where men of small means could speculate on u tri lling capital, as small as a dollar, and these -peculators were spoken of con temptuously as buying and selling wheat by the bucket full. The term was eventually applied to all broker- j age !n stocks and grain when the amounts dealt in were smaller than legitimate dealers or brokers would handle and more particularly to places where there were really no legitimate transactions, but where the proprietor and customer simply bet on the mar ket, the proprietor allowing the cus tomer to take either end of the bet in consideration of a commission, which in reality is his percentage in the game. It is only tho elect among travelers who find their way to Borchtesgudon, in Bavaria, not very far front Salz burg, writes a correspondent of tlie London Tatler. If you drive In a ear tin ■ from tinnier by road, you are ►stopped midway at a customs house and find yourself leaving Austrian ter ritory for Bavarian. Berehtesgndcn is beautifully situa.ed, and it has two noteworthy attractions, one of them the Konigsee, thought by many the most beautiful lake in the world, and the other the salt mines. A visit to the salt mines gives one an .exciting hour. Many tourists take tickets at the top, but many of tlie fair sex are deterred from using them when they see tlie costume that is rendered essential tp the visit. In other words, they have to abandon skirts and adopt a special “rig out.” One may frequently observe that ladies, torn between what they consider modesty and curiosity, go two or three times to the mines before they screw up their courage sufficiently to don the attire and pay the visit. The necessity for women to abandon the usual garment arises from the fact that a portion of (he mine can only be visited through the medium of a kind of slide. This slide is. however, the best thing in the whole visit. It is a great deal better than tobogganing, and, as oiie is in tlie dark and with only a caudle fastened to one’s dress, it is not a little exciting. The strangest Incident in tlie trip is that of the Illumination of what is called "the sail lake.” You at' rowed across this lake in almost absolute darkness, the llliuniiuition being pro vided by a number of miners’ lamps round the lake, and the journey has a very considerable weirdness. The next best experience in the trip is the final ride into daylight on the trucks. This is a Journey through absolute darkness for a very considerable way ijjitil final ly one sees a little gleam of light In the distance. Altogether, as 1 have said, between the toboggan slide, tile car rido and the boat journey across the salt lake the visitor to the Bercli lesgam-u salt mine has plenty for his money. But, curiously enough, he sees very llttli salt. At any rate, the pre pared sail that one uses on one's break fast table is not at all in evidence. A Prom tire Cliiltl.
