Hon. Emory Speer has designated
the Brunswick Daily News as the
official organ of the United Btates
Court, In bankruptcy proceedings, for
Giynn county.
PUBLISHERS NOTICE.
The Nows Publishing Company de
sires it to be distinctly understood that
all legal advertisements must be paid
for In advance. We cannot afford to
devote our Bpace to such advertise
ments and wait on the Courts for the
money.
The Weather.
Forecast for today in Georgia: Fair
except rain hlong the coast.
Summer is making a stout finish.
You can’t judge a man's wealth by
the taxes ho pays.
If you miss the Sunday News you
miss a real treat.
Hooker should send his friend Teddy
a telegram of sympathy. Teddy did
him that way.
The public schools of Brunswick and
Glynn county will open ” r "'cr flatter
ing conditions.
Rev. Len Broughton is to start a
newspaper. Notoriety hunter’s invar
iably seek journalism.
The Sunday News will be filled with
interesting reading and no home in
Brunswick should fail to have a copy.
Senator Hanna says President
Roosevelt goes hunting for trouble.
Those who hunt it generally get what
they are looking for.
It seems that Tom Platt is not so
much of a hog after all. Governor
Odell ha.l something to say in the
New York convention.
The Commoner says: “A large num
ber of newspaper paragraphers who
live in glass houses are throwing
Stones at Rev. Sam Small."
The South should not. forget Roose
veit a Arlington speech and we are not
forgetting the fact that hoj mother
was a southern woman either.
Judge Hal Lewis is reported by the
Greensboro Herald to bo most of the
time unconscious, and slim hopes are
entertained for his recovery.
The withdrawal of Judge Russell
from the race for the Supreme Court
judgshlp leaves only two candidates in
the field. Judge Candler, of Atlanta
and Judge Ross of Macon.
It the populist do not nave a can
didate for the Supreme court judgship
it will not be the fault of t'he Atlanta
Journal. It Is continually reminding
them of the fact that they have a
chance.
A Massacjuseus judge has decided
that a citizen may kill a burglar who
invades his premises. "Oi course,
say 8 the Chattanooga limes, “there is
a great difference between taking the
law into ones own hand by shoot
ing a thief and lynching a negro who
has assaulted a defenseless woman.”
The Rev. Sam P. Jones has again
jumped on the Elks. He says hard
things about the order and uses dirty
language in doing it. This merely an
other application of the Rev. sam for
cheap notoriety, and it is safe to say
that the Elks will not compliment him
by paying any attention to his low
bid. —Albany Herald.
THEY ALL AGREE.
The advocacy of Federal control of
trusts was not original with President
Roosevelt. The report of the Indus
trial Commission is conclusive on tills
poiiit, says the Courier-Journal.
For example the commission asked
John D. Rockefeller what legislation
he would suggest. He said: "First,
Federal legislation under which corpo
rations may be created and regulated,
if that be possible.”
Mr. Archbold, vice-president of the
Standard Oil Company, said to the
commission: “Tne next, great and, to
my mind, inevitable step oi progress in
the direction of our commercial de
velopment lies in the direction of nat
ional or Federal corporations.”
Henry 11. Rogers, another Standar.l
Oil magnate, when asked whether he
would favor this suggestion of Mr.
Archbold’s answered: "Most certain
ly.''
John W. Gates, of stecl-and-wirc
fame, said: "I would be very much in
favor of having national charters
granted.”
James B. Dill and Mr. Pam. trust
lawyers, expressed themselves along
tne same lines.
It is evident, therefore, that the l.b a
of Federal supervision of’Corporations
originated with the trust magnates
themselves and their attorneys. The
President advertises himself as the
enemy of the trusts by adopting their
suggestions.
In regard to Secretary Hay's note to
the powers as to the persecu
tion of the Jews in Koumania, it, is
said tnat several continental govern
ments now wish to convey to the
United States a broad intimation that
it is now interfering in “matters that
do not concern it.” The awful and in
human treatment of the Jews certainly
calls tor action by the civilized gov
ernments of the world.
The Baltimore Sun, alluding to ti.e
Fish tragedy, says: “Sometimes it
seems as though men grow suddenly
weary of respectability and in a mo
ment of madness throw prudence to
the winds and allow the "other self’
full swing. Neither age nor wisdom Is
always proof against this madness.
But when a man sows the wind ami
reaps the whirlwind, it might seem
tnat others similarly tempted would
he frightened into respectability, al
though not convinced of its virtues.
Toe Philadelphia Record says:
"When Secretary Shaw argues against
tariff revision in one breath, anu in
the next argues In favor of recipro
city, he answers himself and confounds
nimself. if there were no need of
abating tariff atrocities there would
be no need of reciprocal tariff agree
ments or palliatives. The- Republican
majority in the United States Senate,
which stubbornly ionises to ratify Hie
reciprocity treaties negotiated with
France, Argentina and other countries,
Is at least logical. The Senators are
opposed to tariff revision no matter in
wnat form it presents itself."
Some idea of the needs of the party
accompanying President Roosevelt
may be gained from the fact tnat when
the dining car was started on its tra
vels it was stocked with or had taken
on a total of 350 pounds of beef, 100
ot lamb, 75 of ham, 25 of tongue, 120
of chicken, 50 of goose, 35 of turkey,
one bushel ot clams, three crates ot
melons, 100 pounds ot-butter, 20 gal
lons of ice cream. This will also fur
nish an Idea of what it uieiius to have
a strenuous stomach. —Pittsburg Dis
patch, The Dispatch has evidently
made a mistake on one item—twenty
live pounds of tongue. Considering
the fact that the President is along,
the tongue item should read "twenty
five hundred pounds of tongue.”
Over a Game ot Chess.
An awful example of the risks to
be encountered by those who play
chess with adversaries of- uncertain
temper is recorded in the “Annals
of the Four Masters.” Two kings
of Irish provinces began a game on
the best of terms, but he who got
the worst of it seized one of the
rooks and flung it with such foree at
his royal opponent that it entered
the brain and killed him on the
spot.
