O’hell. IT the price of coal continues to ad vance it will soon be worth Its weight in silver. Tli Albany Star, a bright live-col umn paper, has been launched upon the journalistic Held. Wo wish it great success. hll 3 The Waco Herald observes that the Republican victory in Maine will look like a nickel wttn a hole In it when Texas is heard from. One of the most important matters tnat will come before the next session of the Goorgla legislature will be a bill providing for a state reform school for youthful criminals. The Atlanta Constitution gels this one oft: When John O. Carlisle ap pears in the Saratoga convention tue band will please play "lie was bred In old Kentucky’’—and buttered in New York. The Chattanooga Times, referring to a fresh denunciation of the Sun day newspapers by Rev. Sam P. Jones, is unkind enough to observe that the Sunday paper "has done more to elevate society than have all the sensational evangelists that ever spouted for so much per spout. Sen sible and sober-minded ministers,” il correctly adds, “have quit denouncing Sunday newspapers.” The testival of Itosh llashonah. or New Year's, according to the Hebrew calendar, will fall on Thursday, Octo ber 2, and the occasion will be marked | with u general observance by the He brews in Brunswick, fen days after Ros'h Hashonah comes Yom Kippur, or the Day of Atonemenr, and this is the most solemn and particular festival oi the whole year. Services continue without Interruption all day, and the time is appointed to be in fast ing and self denial. Tne Now Orleans 1 lcayune says: "The action of Speaker Henderson in declining to stand for re-election, ow ing to the advocacy by the administra tion of such tariff revision as will facilitate reciprocity, serves to make clearer than ever before the inconsis tency and demoralization within the Republican ranks. Mr. Henderson plants himself squarely on an out-and out protectionist platform, and holds that the tariff concessions proposed are nothing more nor less than an in sidlons thrust at the wnole protec tionist idea. Being a protectionist pure and simple, he declines to ac cept the new* doctrine, that protection is merely a matter of expediency, in stead of principle. bitter opposition. It appears that there Is bitter op position to the nomination of Presi dent Roosevelt by the money power In New York. In correspondence to the Chicago Record-Herald, a republican newspa per, that unusually well intormed cor respondent, Walter Wellman, writes as follows: “New Y’ork, September 24. —This is probably the only place in the coun try where the nomination of President Roosevelt a year and a half hence is not conceded by the leading politi cians and men of affairs. Everywhere else there is no question t-iat he will be hia own successor, if the republi can party can command enougn votes at the polls. For several days I nave been in an atmosphere which is de cidedly frigid toward President Roose velt. It is tue atmosphere which sur rounds the men of finance in the lower end of Manhattan Island. “i he bitterness toward Roosevelt which these men display is one of the peculiar phases of current thought. Go where you will among the leading men of v7all street and Wall street means in this sense the financial rail road world—and you hear Roosevelt damned up hill and down dale. 1 hey look upon him as a “crazy man,” as unsafe, as one of whom it is impossi ble to tefl what lie will do next. This feeling is a curious manifestation of the traditional inability of New York to get in touch with the predominant public opinion of tue country. “What hurts these men more than anything else is a feeling of helpless ness. The better Informed among then realize that as matters are now going Roosevelt will be nominated vir tually without opposition for his sec ond term. A few still think a way to beat him can be found, and the ma jority hope almost against hope tnat something win happen during the next year and a half.” That is certainly strong evidence showing which way the wind is blow Ing. The nope of the democrats is get ting the republican party hopelessly Split. The defection In the west was shown by the Henderson withdrawal. If a serious split can he made in the east the outlook will be still more en<y>una£ing. Ifiieqe is f-ertivnly ft lack of confidence in Roosevelt by the wealthy classes of the nation. LOOKS DARK FOR BOODLERS. Circuit Attorney Folk, of St. Louis, is a man who looks after details as well as general principles. Now that he is on the trail of boodle aldermen and bribe-givers of high standing, and ho knows he is on their trail, he id collecting the evidence that must make the hunt fruitful. .1. K. Merrill, one of the king bood lers who weakened and betrayed his fellow-legislators, said that the fare at Julius Lehmann’s birthday party late in 1899 were rolls of currency amounting tn each instance to $2509. These little gifts were distributed to members of a House of Delegates com bine for good work done in passing lighting ordinances quite to the taste of a big corporation and its profes sional lobbyists. In all the sum of $47 ,000 was paid, Murrell said. Circuit Attorney Folk has located the checks, he thinks, oy wTiich the money w-as paid. They were drawn by James Campbell in favor of Ed ward Butler, the municipal boss. One was for $27,000 and the other for $20,000, corresponding with the sum Murrell said had been turned over. Circuit Attorney Folk 1s going to have Campbell's confidential clerk bring the checks into court ami 101 l why they were drawn and tor what pur pose the money was used. The funds were actually distributed by Delegate Kelly, so it is charged. With a man like Circuit Attorney rolk, wno looks up all the details of evidence, prospects for the boodle Al dermen of St. Louis are decidedly dark and stormy, it Indicates that the trial of these alleged boodlers will be no pink-tea affair. They will have to fight for liberty, and fight in good earnest. The country needs more men like Circuit Attorney Folk —men who do things while others look on and talk. THE BRUNSWICK DAILY NEWS.
