From AH Indications it Seems That

Another Route to the
West.
Douglas, Ga., October 7. —Douglas
turned out en masse this afternoon
to welcome President Machen and all
the Brunswick and Birmingham rail
road officials, who arrived here on a
Brunswick and Birmingham president's
special.
It was a gala occasion for this
booming city of Coffee county, tor it
marked the opening of a through line
direct to Brunswick, a ueep water
port, which moans low railroad rates
and consequent increase in commer
cial prosperity for our growing city.
~lu honor of the event, Mayor McDon
tibrand tjie city council and the county
commissioners of Coffee visited the
depot in a body accompanied by sev
eral hundred hankers, merchants and
business men generally, while many
ladles graced the occasion with tneii
fair presence.
When the Brunswick and Birming
ham special pulled into the depot,
Mayor McDonald greeted President
Machen and his associates with an old
south Georgia welcome, and the

RAILWAY LEASE IS ATTACKED.
Laughlin Wants the Chicago and
Alton Deal Upset.
Chicago. October 7.—A hill attack
ing the validity of the lease entered
into between the Chicago and Alton
Railroad Company and the Chicago
and Alton Railway Company in April,
1900, by which all the property owned
by the former was transferred to the
latter for a period of ninety-nine
years, was tiled in the circuit court
tiday by Henry U. Laughlin, a minor
ity otsckholder in tao -Chicago and
-A Ji-.T!T r r oiid Company. Laughlin
declares that E. 11, Harriman and his
associates, including George J. Gould,
E. A. Scliiff, James Stillman and
others, secured a controlling interest
in the Chicago and Alton Railroad
Company and after executing the
lease, caused a fictitious issue atm
increase of corporation stocks and
bonds by which the holders of the
majority of the stock of the Chicago
and Alton Railrolad Company greatly
profited and the minority stockholders
correspondingly lost.’ This process,
Laughlin declares is "vulgarly known
as a ‘squeeze.’ ”
Laughlin is now seeking to have tue
fease declared invalid, 10 have all tip
property devised by the lease return
ed to Tue CTTcago and Alton Railroad
Company and to have an accounting
urv'h between both concerns.

Savannah. Ga.. October V. —The
