The Georgia leg islature will soon be in session. l Our handsome public building is now going up at a rapid rate, and it will be competed on schedule time There is something in the air in the strike region and it now looks as if a settlement is in sight. Atlanta is having a great, time now with her fair and horse show 'There's always something doing in Atlanta. The people of Georgia, should sub scribe liberally to the Oglethorpe nton* ument fund. Sunday bicycle racing In Savannah Ik now being opposed by some of the ministers Savannah sports and min isters seem to have a hard time get ting along, anyway. Senator Jtolliver says that natural competition wound smash the trusts. Quite correct., says the Columbus Kn -o Hirer Sun, but bow can tnero be any natural competition, while tno trusts monopolize every lino of business. The Fries cotton mill merger, In which seventy southern cotton mills are Interested, has been accomplished These mills are scattered throughout Virginia, North and South Carolina Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee. The mayor of Lynn, Mass., wants to hang President Baer and the other coal presidents. He says he does not want to kill them but merely hang them up by their ueo..s to a tree. Ills idea is just to put a rope around tneir necks and‘draw em up and down a fe-w times until they come to terms. MR. KNOX ON TRUSTS. Mr. Knox, the attorney general, dr livened an address before tne Chamber of Commerce of Pittsburg yesterday on trusts, it is a fair inference that the administration desired to have its position bn trusts placed before the country and that the attorney general selecetl his home city in which to per form the task. It is true. Of course, tha the president, in his recent speeches, has discussed the subject ol trusts and stated what, in his opinion, is the best method of dealing with them, but in none of his speeches has he undertaken to point out in detail what the administration has done, and is doing, to enforce the anti trust law This Mr. Knox did in hts Pittsburg speech. He did a little more than that. He pointed out quite clearly the decisions in trust eases by which tho deparment of justice must be guided m its efforts to enforce the anti trust lay. . - 1 •> Sir. Knox would like the country to believe bat tne administraion has done, and is still doing, all that it is possible to make he trusts comply ‘ jpl v * / Sfjpr 1 •* tuT|; iPjpjpfe - ' 11 ■" n. b Mr. Knox, however, does not believe that the anti trust law is broad enough to enable the administration to reach all Ut evils and remedy them Therefore he thinks the law should be amended. Of course, there is a ques tion as to whether it can be sufficient ly amended to accomplish the end aim ed at without trenching on the rights and privileges of the states, but, Mr. Knox believes it can, and he gives his reasons for his belief. Mr. Knox calls particular attentiop. to the difference In truusts. Some are good and some are bad. There is no reason, he thinks, why war should be made upon those which are harmless 'the tendency of the age is in the di rection of. trusts, and what the aim should bo is t.o make all trusts serve the public good In other words. It Is his oplnln tnat trusts should be controlled by the general government He does not seem to think a constitu tional amendment is absolutely neces sary to enable congress' to exescise such control The public rriiud is so wrought up on the subject of trusts that it is prob able that an earnest effort will be made during the coming winter to amend the anti-trust, law. With that law amended and properly enforced there Is no good reason why the gov ernment should not l>e in a position to exercise such control of merged prop erties as to prevent them from being injurious to the public welfare.- Sav annah News.
