There seems to ho n decided dispo sition on (he part of tile republican press to give President Roosevelt Lie credit of ending the groat coat strike and settling the differences existing between the mine operators and the miners. There is no objection to President Roosevelt i-ecelvillg all the credit to which lie is entitled, whit it Is an honest effort to bring about .1 settlement. But it must, he reiuom hared that the president’s effort, alone, resulted In tun Ignominious failure. Hi summoned the coal operators and Mr. Mitchell, the representative of tin minors, before him and used all hit Influence to bring them together. Mr Mitchell announced his willingness to leave the matter In the president’: hands, hut. the operators not only de clined to do so, but were positively in eolent. The high office of the chi- f executive of the nation did not awe them in Ino least and they gave him and the world, tin), to understated that it was none of his business. Tlu* president’s effort, therefore, no matter how honest nis intont-on, irwt only failed to end file trike, hut re Ally made matters more critical, as Gov ernor Stone, following tho suggestion of the operators at the conference with the president, ordered alt tho re maining National Guard of Pennsylva nia into the field —an act that but for tho coolness of the heads of the strik ers would have precipitate/ riot an t bloodshed. At this Juncture the matt who step ped to the trout was J. I’, Morgan, lie summoned the operators in confer ence, and the men who had instill'd and dolled the president readily enough acquiesced in the views of the great financier, ©von to the point of accepting Ihe very proposition that they had spurned when offered by Roosevelt. It must he patent, there fore. to whom tae credit is due for ending the strike. Morgan easily suc ceeded when Roosevelt failed, and while we think it is a national disgrace the fact remains that where the pres ident of the United States, with his high office and great power and influ ence, was impotent, Morgan, a pri vate citizen, brought the answer. It is a dangerous power to be held by one flaw. “DUTY'S” LOUD CALL. The Massachusetts parson who con sidered it his duty to refuse a call to a church which was prepared to give him an advance of |3,0h0 a year, says the New York Sunu, must he regarded as an exception toi tho rule, How easy it has linen for many wearers of the celoth to see in larger salaries a greater sphere of useful ness," hut after all the cut of fne coat and shape of the collar cannot change the man who wears them. It is. natural that a clergyman with a large family jiving in tho country should he willing to consider that it was his plain duty to remove to the city. Why, we have plain rectors in this town who have refused steadily to even consider bishoprics, prefer ring a simple surplice in New York to lawn sleeves anywhere else, ho far the oil.- council .has done nothing looking to such siren: im provement, as w’i; inaice Su’ days oc currence imp-s. title.
